Another beautiful temple. Taken at Banteay Srei, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia.

One rainy day in August of 2011, John and I visited Banteay Srei.

According to research, Banteay Srei in Khmer means City of Women. At first, they thought it meant “auspicious city”. But later finds (inscriptions in the monuments) , said that its original name is Isvarapura which means the City of Shiva.

This temple was built in the late 10th century under the reign of Kings Rajendravarman and Jayavarman.

Although this temple is smaller than others, it was considered as one of the most beautiful temples in Angkor because of its exquisite décor which was carved from red sandstone. 🙂

I just stood in awe as I watched it. After several centuries, it is still standing proud and majestic.

You know, this is why I take a lot of pictures. It reminds me of what I felt then and it reminds me of the memory that will forever be etched in my mind….

Happy Father’s Day :)

My father used to drink and smoke. Past tense, if you noticed. 🙂 Thank God!

But before he became a better version of himself, we all had to go through a very difficult phase in our lives.

He had a stroke due to high blood pressure. Since he didn’t like doctors and hospitals, we had to force him. By force, I mean we called for the hospital guard/nurse/ambulance etc just so we can take him to the hospital. I guess, that’s what happens when you have a stroke. Your brain gets muddled and you become paranoid. In my father’s case, he thought that everyone was against him. Thus , he trusted no one.

Upon reaching at the hospital, we found out that his BP reading was 240/180. And after the CT Scan, it turned out that his left brain had a blood clot and his right brain has an atrophy. Layman’s term on atrophy is that – part of his right brain was dying. 😦

We were told that it was a blessing in disguise that we took him to the hospital that day or it would have been fatal. We said we wanted to take him for days already but he didn’t want to until you know, we resorted to forcing him.

He was admitted for almost a week under the care of Dr. Marcos Ong, one of the best neuro surgeons  in Davao. Dr. Edward Cagape, being a friend to both John and I, came to visit and checked on him as well. Thank you both for all your help.

So there he was in his private room, wasting away. We thought he was going to die. You know when things like these happen, you remember everything. Since childhood to present. At least that’s what happened to me and my sisters.

We remembered that no matter how drank he was, he would carry rice and food at home still. No, he never forget those. And when our mother got sick, he always made sure that she had medicine. My father isn’t a saint. Far from it..  But he’s one of the best, despite his imperfections. Considering that his name is Perfecto.  🙂

It has been seven years since then. With maintenance, supervised by Dr. Ong still, he has fully recovered. He is able to move, walk, talk , like a normal person. No one would ever think that he went through that dark phase, looking at him now.

Plus he no longer drinks and smokes. That’s the best news there. My sisters are blessed with a better version of our father.

For that, I would like to thank God. He could have taken him right there and then. But He didn’t. He gave us more chance to love papa.

To Papa, thank you for all your sacrifices. If not for you, we will not be where we are now.

We love you Pa. Happy Father’s Day… 🙂

To those whose dads are still alive but you’re just not  talking to them, if you can, try. Time is running out for them. Tomorrow might be too late.

To my husband John and my sisters inlaw, whose dad (Pop) died last year. Hugs … Wherever you are Pop, I pray that you are happy. We love you too…

To all the fathers out there, happy father’s day.

MAN OF STEEL on Independence Day

June 12 is Independence Day in the Philippines. It is a national holiday so that everyone can celebrate our freedom and to commemorate the heroes who died for it.

As we entered SM Lanang Premier, I could hear the blaring sound playing Tagalog songs. One of which was “Ako ay Pilipino” (I am a Filipino). It reminded me of those elementary days where we were asked to sing such in school. I wonder if the present generation still  knows it? I hope it is still being introduced in all Philippine schools, so the kids will understand how our forefathers died so we can have our freedom. And that they too, should stand proud for being a Filipino.

So why are we in SM, you ask?

A month ago, Therese of Smart Infinity emailed me a form for the Infinity-Imax card they are giving me..  It’s just one of the perks for being a Smart Infinity member. Most important of which is that you have a personal account holder who handles your phone line. It helps when you are always on the go. 🙂 In my case, I just call Therese when I have concerns and she handles everything with patience and grace.

The Imax card though will give me additional points everytime I use it at any SM Imax cinema all over the country. The nice thing about it is that I do not have to fall inline anymore. Plus I get to have free drinks and pop corn everytime I use it. Cool right? hehe

Smart Infinity Imax Card

Smart Infinity Imax Card

I was told to go at SM’s Imax Theatre before 2:30pm because they will be offering food and drinks prior to the Pre-Screening of the Man of Steel. And so we did. 🙂

You know, it really pays to come early. By 2:30, we were already seated and was just waiting for the show to start. The theatre filled up fast. Some members had a hard time looking for a good seat. If you’re going to have 3D viewing, I think it’s nice to be seated in the middle. At least, I prefer to be.

Then I saw Vice Mayor Al David Uy of Samal together with his wife. We’ve known each other for years since we do business there. They sat beside us. Which gave us a chance to discuss things about the island. Lol, yeah even in the theatre huh? Anyways, he mentioned that another ferry port will be constructed at Km. 13 in Sasa very soon. We all agreed that even if the fare will still be the same, at least the line won’t be that long anymore, once the new ferry boats to Samal open up to the public sometime in December. Nice right? 🙂 On a personal note, I have always liked him because, coming from a rich family and having a top position in a local government, Vice Mayor Uy is so down to earth.

Then I saw Mayor Sara Duterte. You know, the pictures don’t do her justice. At all. She looks a lot younger and slimmer. With her red blouse, she looked stunning.

I also saw Congressman Karlo Nograles. And the owner of MX 3, Gina Estoce,  who happens to be a client. We chatted for a bit after the show. Another client, Ms. Mimi Acosta was there too. We saw each other in the bathroom. ha ha

So finally, Man of Steel started. I didn’t read any reviews prior to watching the movie. I didn’t want to be biased, that’s why. I simply wanted to watch it with John in 3D and decide if I like it or not.

And the verdict, I like this version of Superman. Nahh.. I am not going to spoil it for those who haven’t watched the movie yet. 🙂 So I will not give you the twists and all…

I can tell you though that I have adjusted already to watching 3D movies.

The first time, (about 2 months ago) , I felt like Iron Man was going to hit me when he was flying. You could hear me expressing “ay..”  Lol .  That’s the beauty of watching a movie in 3D though, it feels so real. It seemed like I was a part of it. It’s cool once you get used to it. 🙂 John and I were actually worried it might give us headaches. But it didn’t…

The movie took more than 2 hours. It was almost dinner time when we came out of the Theatre. My sister informed me earlier that she’s taking the whole family to SM. That way the kids can watch the fountain show before dinner. After a short call, I found out that they were in Hukad. So John and I followed them there. 🙂

You know, sometimes we take for granted the democracy we are enjoying now. When I was in High School, I remember how it was during Martial Law. Oh, I didn’t like that. I am so glad that we have freedom now. My nephews can enjoy their young life without fear, etc.

So to all the heroes who made this possible, thank you very much.

To Therese,  thank you.

And to Smart Infinity, more power to you!

A Meeting with Chyng Reyes

I learned about Chyng Reyes of www.chyngreyes.com in 2011 when I was researching for our Asian trip. You know me, I spend months studying online before we go on a trip abroad to understand the culture, etc. of the places we’re visiting to.

While I was browsing, I came across Chyng’s story on how she and her friend were accused of being drug traffickers in Bali, Indonesia just because they were Filipinas. Correction “beautiful Filipinas”, according to the immigration officer.

I cried the first time I read it. And I cried again just now, after reading her story once again.

http://www.chyngreyes.com/2011/06/my-traumatic-experience-as-alleged-drug.html?utm_source=feedburner

That sad article paved the way for Chyng and I to become friends. Until she texted me last year that she plans on visiting Davao City. I told her that I will be in America during her schedule but I can have our driver pick her up at the airport and take her to the hotel, etc.

Everything was set. 🙂 Or so I thought… Then,  Manila was hit by a typhoon. And their place got flooded. So she had to stay since it was impossible to travel on the way to the airport.

Second attempt – she and friends were left by the airplane. lol  Sorry Chyng, didn’t mean to laugh. 🙂 But I just find that so funny because she lives near the airport!

Then one day, I received a text message from her  saying “Hi, Ate Lea. I booked a flight again to Davao”. I said, “hehe.. ok Chyng. When are you arriving?” She said – June 1. I offered to pick her up at the airport but she said that Park Inn by Radisson will be there for her and her friend, Rob.

June 1 – I got busy with work. It took John and me forever to leave the office because there were clients around. Since our office is about a km only from SM Lanang, we decided to eat at Hog’s Breath Café. One of our favorite restaurants in Davao.

I texted chyng saying that John and I am having lunch at HBC. If they haven’t eaten yet, they can come over and join us. A few minutes later, Chyng and Rob arrived. 🙂 We had fun talking about travels, about Davao, etc. And then she said “oh my God, this is sooo good!” Referring to the Salmon she’s eating. I said yeah, that’s why John and I love Hog’s Breath. They’re very bad for our diet. LOL

Two hours later and after the photo op (of course! ha ha) , we parted ways. Agreeing, that if there’s anything they need , they will just text us.

Ok so everything was well with the world.. right? 🙂

No! Cebu Pacific crashed at the Davao International Airport. All flights were cancelled because it took them several days to take off their plane beside the runway. If you’re on leave from work and you have to go home at a certain date, that is very stressful. So I had our driver drove her to the airport and back  to fix her schedule. Tiger airways was so helpful but well, since it is impossible for their plane to leave and she cannot wait for the airport operation’s schedule to resume, she finally decided to take the General Santos City route back to Manila a day later than her scheduled departure.

And you know what, despite all these things, Chyng and Rob had a blast in Davao and Samal Island. 🙂 Infact, Chyng told me that Rob is thinking of migrating to Davao. ha ha..

All these hype about Mindanao being scary, are just that. Hype. Those who dared to come to Davao, if possible, don’t want to leave anymore. Life is here, indeed. That’s the slogan of our city. 🙂 I am so proud!

Yes, I am a proud Davaoena! :)

Yes, I am a proud Davaoena! 🙂

With regards to Indonesia, I’m sorry but it will never be a part of my journey. Maybe things have changed by now. But well, the purpose of getting a vacation is to enjoy the place and its people.  And for us to rest.  The thought of being framed  up though, just because you are a Filipina, that is so stressful.  So I refuse to be subjected to that. I don’t need more stress. I already have white hairs, as it is. ha ha..

It’s just really sad because Indonesia is such a beautiful country. They boast of white sand beaches and historical temples. But, white sand beaches are common in the Philippines. 🙂 And as to the temples, I’ve seen the best.

John and I spent almost a week in Siem Reap, Cambodia to visit the Angkor Temples. So I would rather go back there because the people are friendlier. And the place is so pretty! The cost? Believe me, it’s cheap there. 🙂

To Chyng, it was great to finally meet you in person! To those who haven’t seen her yet, she’s a very sweet young woman. 🙂 Whoever she marries someday, is going to be a lucky man. When one marries a traveler, believe me – you’re in for an adventure of a lifetime! (I am not selling Chyng, but according to her , she is single. he he.. Rob is her best friend. )

To Hog’s Breath staff, you are one of the best! Thank you for always accommodating us. 🙂

To the whole world, if God permits, I will continue to travel until the day I die. 🙂 Hopefully by the time I reach 90, the world has a better understanding of the fact that there are good and bad people everywhere. Most Filipinos are really good ones. In the same manner that most Westerners or the rest of the Asians are… Let us not pre judge….

And yes, Filipinos can afford to travel too. he he

Breakfast – Hog’s Breath Cafe

If you want to treat yourself and your special someone on a Sunday morning, you may want to spend your breakfast at Hog’s Breath Café.

They offer several mouth watering dishes that would surely satisfy one’s craving for a delicious palate.

Hog's Breath Cafe

The Menu:

20130601_125935_1

20130602_101339_1 Hog's Breath Cafe

I ordered Hoggie’s Bacon and Eggs. While John got the Egg Benedict. 🙂 It was a tough choice. Everything sounded delectable. And you know, Hog’s Breath being Hog’s Breath, it didn’t disappoint.

Ahh.. the hashbrown that came with my order was the best I’ve eaten so far..

It reminded of the luncheon meeting I had with a friend from Manila, the famous blogger Chyng Reyes. She couldn’t get over the delicious taste of HBC’s salmon menu. 🙂 Her and friend, Rob were so amazed that Davao is the only place in the Philippines where you can find Hog’s Breath Café. Yep, that’s Davao for you guys! 🙂

So, if you’re in Davao, try visiting Hog’s Breath Café. It is located at the back of SM Lanang Premier. You can go through the supermarket entrance. Then proceed to the back door. And then turn left. It is facing the dancing fountain.

Bon Appetit my friends! 🙂

Cebu Pacific – Davao Mishap

We were having dinner at Jaime’s Buffet Restaurant in Lanang, when the black out happened. Boy, was it dark! It’s a good thing Jaime’s has its own generator.

Black out and a really freaky strong rain, that’s bad for people who travel right? More so, for pilots trying to land a plane. At least it seems that way to me.

I applaud the pilot who landed safely  Cebu Pacific Flight 5J 971  on the night of  June 2, 2013 at the Davao International Airport.

“Safely” in this context means that all the passengers and crew are alive. That is something to thank God for. It could have been worst right? It could have crashed badly, leaving everyone dead. But God in his goodness, protected everyone from harm.

The plane landed not at the runway, but on the grass beside the runway. 🙂 In other words, it skidded off and overshot the runway. But just the same, it landed with no casualties. For me, that’s something. What do you think?

Courtesy of Facebook user. Thank you for sharing.

Courtesy of Facebook user. Thank you for sharing.

The accident is still being investigated.

But the news said that flights are supposed to resume today, 5 June 2013.

The 3 day non-operation of Davao International Airport brought about P250 million pesos of losses, according to the news. 😦 That’s composed on cancelled flights, cancelled hotel bookings, etc.

That is so sad.. As a businesswoman to the other, I feel for you.

What I do not understand though is the news that said:

a) 911 was not allowed to enter the vicinity of the airport? If that is true, why?

After this accident, I hope that the management of the airport will have better emergency plans considering the lives at stake.

In the meantime, Mayor Sara Duterte, isn’t happy about this. Tsk.. tsk… I am sure, she will get to the bottom of this.

So let’s wait for its development.

For now, I just want to thank God for the protection he always extends to the city I love most, Davao. 🙂

And to all the passengers, I pray that you are all well . I am sure, it was such a traumatic experience for all of you. Specially for those who were kept inside the plane? I still don’t understand that part.

Aren’t passengers supposed to run and leave the plane in cases like these? So why were there people left inside? What if it exploded? It just doesn’t sound right..

I may not know you in person, but I am praying that you will all be healed. In time.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

Beng and I were talking about upcoming trips abroad  when she mentioned her last day of classes at the Metro Lifestyle. Other than a being model and a successful realtor / businesswoman, she is also a teacher. She doesn’t have to, believe me. She can have a high end life , forever,  without working. But yoga is her passion.  That’s why she does it for a mere fee.

Our conversation through facebook went…

Ruby S. Bernardo

Lea,

Last day na kasi ng classes ko today – e wala ako magaling na photographer na masabihan agad – kung hindi ka busy and because you’re one heck of a photographer – puwede ka mag take picture ng class sa metro either this am at 8 am or 4 pm later? Kung puwede lang. Pang portfolio ko sa Vancouver…

  • Lea Walker

Ay chika.. I’ll visit you this morning. Pero ok lang, 30 to 45mins lang ako? Kasi I need to pick up a client sa marco by 9am. Tapos me kembali coast ako ng 1pm. Samal kasi yon. I’m not sure what time kami makabalik. If ok with you, i’ll be happy to be a part of your class talaga! Kahit photographer lang. hahaha

  • Ruby S. Bernardo

Of course!!! Kahit 20 minutes lang…. ❤ THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

  • Ay i’m so happy!!! sige, see you mamaya. I’ll prepare na para di ako ma late. hehehe

  • Thanks!!! See you. On the roll tayong dalawa. 😀

    ——————

I arrived at Metro Lifestyle 15 minutes earlier. I was happy I did because it gave us more time to chat about personal things. 🙂 We call it chikahan in the Philippines. hehe

At exactly 8am, Beng’s class started. This is kinda difficult for me to describe so I will show you the pictures I took.

I was in awe. I told her that I will join her class when she comes back from Canada. 🙂

Short meditation before Beng started. I call it, self-preparation. hehe

Short meditation before Beng started. I call it, self-preparation. hehe

I was there for 30 minutes only, because I had to pick up a client by 9am. But what I saw impressed me a lot!

I’m just worried I’m going to break all my bones when I join in the future. ha ha..

You know what I loved about it the most, is the fact that it’s not noisy. When you go to a gym in the Philippines, it’s normal to hear the blaring sound of the music. Obviously a lot of people likes that here, but it gives me headache! So I was so glad that with Yoga, loud noise will defeat its purpose. So it’s really perfect for me and for those who want to deep breathe, exercise and relax… And not being bombarded by noise. 🙂

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Class is at Metro Lifestyle along Torres St., Davao City. Ask for Ms. Ruby Bernardo. Her classes will start again sometime in September. Please call Tel. No. 228-6180 for more details.

    Namaste! 🙂

This is why I love photography. When I look at the photos I’ve taken in the past, no matter how tired I am, I get to feel better and relaxed. Always. Somehow it makes my relationship with God a little better everyday. It reminds me often that I am surrounded by very beautiful nature  and people. I choose to look at both as a blessing. Thus reminding me to say my thanksgiving. Like I always say, being happy is a decision we have to make everyday. We can choose to gripe and complain. But how can I and how can you when we are blessed with this?

Plantation Villa – Madaum

My job has perks. That’s why I love it. 🙂

I was invited by the developer of Plantation Villa to visit their site. It’s a new subdivision located in Madaum, Tagum City. They are offering large plot of land (1,000sqm at least) for buyers who want to retire in a “hacienda-type” high end community.

I was told that it’s ok to bring possible buyers. So I invited existing clients who have become our best friends. I’m so glad that they were available on short notice. 🙂

What I loved about it is that one of the amenities is Banana Beach Resort. If you have been reading my blog, you would know that my family and I have been visiting it for years already. I love  kayaking there. I love seeing their forest with the monkeys and other wild animals. I love their fishing village. I get so excited catching a lot of bangus (milkfish).. 🙂 That’s another entertainment for John who contents himself by watching me shriek everytime I catch one. He said that I am scaring the bangus that way. ha ha..

This time , there’s more! Their canopy walk already exists. 🙂 I’ve wanted to do that eversince. But of course, it took time for them to finish the walkway on top of the trees. I always say that I am scared of heights. But well, it doesn’t stop me from trying anything. 🙂 So off I went to Banana Beach Resort’s canopy walk, with John and our friends.  🙂

Here are my proof(s).. 🙂

Plantation Villa is developed by Hijo Plantation. They are only selling lots. They have house designs that one can choose from. But anyone has an option to build their own provided that it conforms to the subdivision theme.

We had fun when we visited the place recently for a short period of time. Imagine, how beautiful would it be if you live within a resort community, surrounded by the beach. Madaum river. A coconut plantation. A 60 hectare forest with monkeys,  boars, birds, etc.

That is so relaxing right? I remember sitting beside the beach at Lanikai (their other high end resort in the area) . It felt beautiful when the fresh sea breeze touched my face.

Alorro Beach Resort – Kaputian

I learned about Alorro Beach Resort earlier this month by accident. 🙂 We were inspecting a property nearby and we could see from where we were standing a long stretch of white sand. So we drove towards the area and found several simple cottages facing the beach.

Earlier this week, our workers in Samal informed us that they finished cleaning the area already. And that we can walk on the property  without fear of being bitten by a snake. 🙂 So John and I went back. This time with the whole family.

Yep, we took them along so they can enjoy the beach.  I said “they”,  because after the photo op John and I had to work…  🙂

I walked to the beach to take this photo of  the water, sand and the boats. Beautiful right? I think we found a new favorite. 🙂

Like I said above, the cottages are very simple. Hence, the cost is so cheap as well. Entrance fee is only Php10.00 per head. And the day time cottage is only P150.00 . For those who want to stay overnight, they have closed cottages ranging from P350.00 to P800.00 . You can also bring a tent and just camp out infront of the beach. I’m sure the sunrise in this area is spectacular as well.

The daytime cottage at Alorro Beach Resort.

There is a sari-sari store in the area where you can buy canned goods, soft drinks, etc. But I suggest that you just bring your own food when you go there. In our case, my sister Pearlie prepared afritada ,  bihon and rice. Then brought fresh pork chop for grilling at the site. Yes, Alorro has a grilling area. 🙂

The most beautiful part I liked was when the neighboring fishermen went to our table and sold us freshly caught fishes! The price was P160.00 only for “isda sa bato”. 🙂 Gee, that’s almost P400.00 pesos per kilo when I buy from SM supermarket. Oh, I really loved that!

Another thing I liked was the boat ride. I rented a motorboat  to access the beach below the property we walked through earlier in the day.

My brother inlaw, Ruben.

The water is amazing. It’s so clean and clear. And I could see the corals underneath. With the corals and the rocks, I saw a lot of small fishes in the water.

My verdict? The place is rough but with some development, one can enjoy it to its full potential. During our walk, I saw 3 tall rocks (at least 5 meters high) which is perfect for rock climbing. And there is a cave for spelunking… Nope, we weren’t able to go inside yet. When we do, I’ll share the photos with you in the future.

Time to go back to the resort.. :)
