Crabs and Ribs Buffet at Claw Daddy

I wrote about Claw Daddy earlier this year. –

https://leawalkerblog.com/2013/03/23/claw-daddy/

I thought that I’d write about this restaurant once again because we found out that they have a new promo which will be running on Saturdays and Sundays. They will be serving the Crabs and Ribs Buffet from breakfast to dinner at Php500.00 per head.

So last night, John and I , went to visit them again.

The buffet consisted of  soup, salad bar, pasta counter, seafood fried rice, fish and pork menu.  And of course, the main course being the crabs and ribs.

I found that perfect because John loves ribs. While I love crabs. 🙂 Claw Daddy (1)

This Singaporean Crab menu tasted spicy and oh so good…

Claw Daddy (2)

Sorry, I forgot the name of this one. But I will call this the “seafood goodness”. haha.. I loved the combination of crabs, clams and shrimps in this menu.

Claw Daddy (3)

Diablo riblets and Kansas City ribs were both good. The latter being hot and spicy. John ate them with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. 🙂

Claw Daddy (4)

The pasta station. Maybe I’ll try this next time. I concentrated mostly with the crabs and other seafood dishes.  Those really ruined my diet. ha ha

Claw Daddy (5)

Yep, Claw Daddy had a wide selection of food that complemented the main course of crabs and ribs.

Dessert was an option of fruits, brownies and carrot cake.

Claw Daddy is located at the ground floor of SM Lanang Premier, on the way to the fountain court.

S & R – Part II

I mentioned in my previous post about S & R that I’ll probably go back there after two months for the membership.

But then again, John couldn’t wait. lol

So off we went to S & R again. This time, I had with me a printed form which I got online. Filled up and signed. With 2 valid id’s for both John and me.

When it was my turn to be served by their staff, she asked for two id’s. I told her, there are two photocopies attached to the form. And to please check if that would suffice. She was all smiles when she saw those. Obviously, the reason why it takes forever for them to serve everyone is that most people are filling up the forms when they get there. There’s nothing wrong with that, except that it takes too much time. Causing a long line at the counter.

It helps when you come prepared. You are saving the time of other people as well. 🙂

My membership application finished in less than 5 minutes! And voila, John and I got our S & R cards. 🙂

The fee? It’s P700.00 for the principal applicant. And P400.00 for the supplementary card. Both cards are good for one year.

So what did we buy?

Charcoal – we both love grilled isda sa bato, so I use charcoal a lot. This one though is different, I use this “light a match” charcoal to burn the local ones. It’s in a huge bag but I only got 3 pcs , lighted the match and got the fire burning.  Just like that! 🙂 Thanks John for making my life a lot easier.  This charcoal is worth more than P1,000.00 pesos. But if you always grill, this is worth it. Besides, I’d be using it for probably a year. So come to think of it, it’s not really that expensive.

We bought some Montana meat, eggs, etc. Plus these:

S & R

There are 18 thick burger patties in a pack. It costs P1,800.00 . It comes out P100.00 per patty. Same price more or less when you buy a hamburger in downtown Davao. But this one tastes so much better.

S & R

I would prefer a freshly baked apple pie.  But this does not disappoint. 🙂 Besides, where can you get a really yummy apple pie here? The only place I liked so far is BluGre in SM Ecoland.

S & R

Ahh.. the fresh mini burgers I tried in the US were better, of course. But this makes for an easy merienda when you’re at home. 🙂

S & R

We don’t find corn dogs that much in Davao.  I don’t know why when it tastes good. So imagine John’s reaction when he found one at S & R. lol

These are just a few example of what you can get from S & R Davao. And they’re adding more. 🙂

Manila Kidnap Victim, Rescued in Davao

Davao City is the headline of all  tv reports and newspapers today.

On July 5 – Sally Chua of Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines was kidnapped allegedly by Bye Bye Kidnap for Ransom group.

From there, she was travelled by land to Davao City using a Mitsubishi Pajero and Montero. Per interview, she told the kidnappers that the money can only be withdrawn in Davao. She did such because she knew that Davao City will not tolerate any criminals. And that she will be rescued here.

On July 11, she was accompanied by the kidnappers to withdraw the P15,000,000.00 pesos ransom  from Allied Bank along C.M. Recto St. in downtown Davao.

The kidnappers, not knowing that Camp Crame in Manila, coordinated with Mayor Rody Duterte regarding the incident, brought supposedly 3 vehicles and parked outside the bank.

Around 11:30 a.m., the shoot out happened. Leaving 3 kidnappers dead and 1 in custody for investigation. The police also recovered high end guns, one get-away vehicle and other personal belongings of the kidnappers.

The victim, Sally Chua, was rescued.

No civilians were hurt or injured during the shootout.

Davao City is on total lockdown as of the moment. All entrances and exits are heavily manned because there are 10 kidnappers still at large.

“I told you (the criminals) , not to f#*! it here in Davao City” , was the mayor’s reply when asked about the shoot out.

Let me congratulate our Mayor, Rody R. Duterte for a job well done. Mayor Duterte is known for being the night owl who prowls in downtown Davao to secure its constituents, riding in a big bike or sometimes in a taxi, shocking the drivers when they find out that their passenger is the famous mayor. 🙂 He is also known for giving warnings to criminals not to do their business in Davao City.

Same goes to PS Supt. Dela Rosa, our local police and the Manila police who were also present during the rescue mission.

Davao City’s slogan,  “Life Is Here” ,  is NOT  applicable to criminals. 🙂

MESA

Mesa has been in SM Lanang Premier  for quite sometime already. But we always pass it by.

Yesterday, together with my sister and her kids, we chose to try their food instead of going to the usual places I go to.

You know, that turned out to be a good decision. When we came in, the staff were very accommodating. Our waiter, Ton , gave us the menu. They had a wide selection and everything looked good.

But I opted for their Inihaw Sampler. It consisted of prawns, mussels, squid, pork bbq , grilled porkchop and grilled chicken leg.  This platter of goodness is delicious! 🙂

MESA

I also asked Ton what would he recommend for soup. He said that their best seller is chicken binakol.

From what I understand, the soup is made of buko juice. When it was served to us, there were coconut strips in it. My first time to have tried one. 🙂 It tasted good. But I don’t think it’s going to be my favorite. I love buko. But I prefer it to be the “juice” , not the soup. he he…

Our waiter, Ton, preparing the Chicken Binakol.

The place is cozy, specially with the local bamboo and rattan décor. And the price is just right. For 5 adults and 1 kid, I believe that the bill of Php1,500.00 was ok. Considering that we had unlimited ice tea and we ordered rice of course. 🙂

I found the bathroom to be very clean too. I mentioned this in my blog before I know. I prefer to eat where I know that the bathroom is clean. Does not matter if it’s carenderia! 🙂

Mesa is located at the back of SM Lanang Premier . Just head towards the fountain area. You won’t miss it. Contact Info:    www.mesa.net.ph

See the lechon? It looks good right?! :)

Of course we had to pose right? LOL

MESA

If you’re in Davao, try visiting the place. You won’t be disappointed if you want local Filipino dishes. 🙂

PHOTO OF THE DAY – “Autumn”

Autumn

I miss autumn… I miss the beautiful colors it bring.  I miss the cool weather. 🙂

Looking at this picture, it brought back beautiful memories of our roadtrip in the US. It made me think how lucky I am to have seen this beautiful sight in my life.

Thank you Lord.

SECDEA BEACH RESORT

I had an interesting day yesterday. 🙂 John and I visited Secdea Beach Resort in Samal Island. We were looking at properties nearby so we thought that we’d stop by and check the place.

The resort is huge. From the main gate, we saw this vast space planted with mango trees. We followed the winding road going down and there’s another entrance with a guard house. After checking our vehicle, the guard let us in.

Upon entering, the first thing we saw was their fishing lagoon. You all know that I love to fish. 🙂 And it made me happy when I realized that the lagoon has bangus as well. Yes, there are tilapias, which is what’s common in most fish ponds in Davao resorts.

The Fishing Lagoon.

The Fishing Lagoon.

The whole clubhouse area was composed of :  a small but very nice lobby with a tiny bridge connecting to the game rooms. Under this bridge is a mini pond which isn’t done yet. There’s water but no fish as the moment. And the Infinity Restaurant. It is called as such because it overlooks the huge infinity pool which opens to the beach and the view of Davao City and its mountains. Beautiful is an understatement. 🙂 Believe me!

The Clubhouse.

I wasn’t kidding when I said that the pool area is beautiful. 🙂

The Infinity Pool.

The Infinity Pool.

Oh I so loved the panoramic vista infront of me. It seemed endless and very therapeutic. I loved the cabana and the open cottages scattered all over the place. On the far distance, I saw small and big Ligid islands. And of course, the mangrove area. They put up a wooden bridge so people can walk around or  enjoy wading their feet in sea water. And at the same time, see the fishes and other creatures lurking/growing in the mangroves. Just the thought of that is amazing right? 🙂 Imagine, doing so!

Staying there would not be boring. Part of their amenities are: tennis and basketball courts. And for those who want extreme adventure, you can try  rappelling and wall climbing.

For day tours, the entrance fee is P650.00 per head. But that includes lunch already.

For those who wish to stay, there are sea side cottages for couples. Lodges for a family of four. And Villas for bigger groups or families, that can accommodate 12 people.

The Seaside Cottages cost P3,500.00 . Breakfast isn’t included, which costs P200.00 per head. It can be Filipino or Western breakfast – (with ham/bacon or hotdog).

The Seaside Cottages.

The Villa is priced at P12,000.00 per night. But like I said, can accommodate 12 persons.

For meetings or seminars, they have really nice function rooms near the beach.

The functions halls at Secdea Beach Resort. Nice right? :)

The functions halls at Secdea Beach Resort. Nice right? 🙂

I know, I know.. Summer is over.  But like I always say, Samal Island is just a few minutes away from Davao. 🙂 So going there isn’t a hassle at all!

How to go to SECDEA:

From Babak, travel time is about 30mins. It is only 10kms away but as of now, they are concreting the road. That’s about 50% done already. So expect rough roads. Hence, the 30mins travel time.

Head towards Brgy. San Isidro. You won’t get lost. Just follow the signages on the road. 🙂

For more details, Secdea can be contacted through:

Tel No.  (082) 305-2774 or (082) 305-4028

This is an on-going development still. But the place has very comfortable accommodations that are cheaper than most. Not to mention the amenities and the view … Yes , it is worth visiting for, if you ask me. 🙂

Secdea Beach Resort

So, this is us bumming around. he he….

Secdea Beach Resort

Before I forget, thanks to the staff of Secdea for accommodating us. And to Jerry, for showing us the properties.

I had a great day! 🙂

Photo of the Day – Street Dancers

Kadayawan

This photo was taken during the street dancing parade of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival on August 2012.

The   term “Kadayawan” is derived from the Mandaya word “madayaw”, a  warm   and friendly greeting used to explain a thing that is valuable,   superior,  beautiful, good, or profitable.

Its culmination happens every 3rd weekend of August. This comprises of several activities, such as the one above – street dancing. Floral Float Parade, several competitions, trade shows , etc.

So if you’re thinking of visiting Davao City, that would be the best time of the year, for you will find abundant harvest of fruits, crops and other products.

Come and join us then! 🙂

Courtyard By Marriott

I was booking for hotels when I remembered that I haven’t written about my experience at the Marriott Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. Hence, this very late post.

When we arrived in the US, it was 4 degrees Celsius. Imagine that at night,  with the wind blowing in your face. 🙂 That’s what greeted us when we went out of Memphis airport. John stayed with our luggages. While I tried to look for the Marriott vehicle. But I couldn’t find it.

So we went inside the airport lobby again and used their phone to call for the hotel. The person who responded told us that their driver was late. But he is now on the way. Fifteen minutes later, our ride arrived.

Marriott is an expensive hotel. So I was expecting a better service. It was kinda disappointing when you know, you’re tired from a 24 hour trip and the one who’s supposed to pick you up is late. 😦  Very sad right?

When we reached the hotel, the driver took our luggages inside the lobby. The check in didn’t take time. That’s what I love about Agoda (www.agoda.com). Everything just works smoothly when I book through them.

Anyway, after check in, we waited for the hotel staff to assist us going to our room.

But we were only given the key and the direction on where to go. John and I looked at each other. Picked up our things. And carried them to our room.

Disappointed is an understatement. Never did I expect that Marriott’s staff are like that. Don’t get me wrong, they were nice. But I found them to be lazy. They could have given us a baggage cart but they didn’t even bother to do that…

When we reached our room, I was glad to see that it was very clean. 🙂 The bathroom was big and the bathtub was spotless.

The next day, John and I prepared early. We were expecting my sister inlaw that morning to pick us up.

The pool area which was closed that time due to the cool weather.

Marriott

We proceeded to the restaurant for breakfast. The service was fast. And I was so surprised to see their serving. The plate was so big and it was filled with food.  John laughed when I wondered how was I going to eat all of it. haha..

My breakfast at Marriott Hotel.

My breakfast at Marriott Hotel.

You know, I liked the place. The room was spacious and clean. But their employees need to be more helpful and accommodating. I mean seriously, it would be great business for them IF they have  better staff right? Oh well, Marriott is such a big chain that they probably don’t care anymore..

A month later, we went back to Marriott again. If I hadn’t book with them in advance through Agoda, I would have chosen another hotel near Memphis airport. But there it was. Once again, the service sucks. 😦 John and I carried our things again to our room. And did the same thing the next day when we checked out. But at least, the driver was on time in taking us to the airport this time.

Despite such a let down, I still had good memories. Because during our last night in the US,  everyone came to spend time with us at the hotel. Bitter sweet memories came rushing through my mind as I looked at the photos I took then…

John, mommy, my sisters inlaw Jane and Jean. And my nephew, Austin. :)

Marriott  John, was messing with mommy so she won’t get too sad, during our last night in the US.

Mommy and John.

Mommy and John, trying not to cry when mommy did… Saying goodbye sucks!

You know, in the Philippines, our elders tell us to look for a husband that loves and respects his mom. Because he would turn out to be a good person and a good husband. I found one in John. Thank God!  Always…

We are going back to the US. Of course! 🙂 But I don’t think I will stay again at the Courtyard by Marriott….

S & R Davao

S & R Davao branch opened weeks ago. But with our schedule, it is difficult for me and John to visit the place considering the volume of people lining up (literally) for its membership.

So we both agreed to spare part of our afternoon to check what’s there before we decide if we want to be a member or not. Why? A) Because there’s a membership fee of P700.00 pesos.  B) I hate long lines. 🙂 ha ha…

And so we did that yesterday.

Here are the things that I found interesting:

They got freezers full of imported goods that I haven’t seen here yet. Needless to say, John was happy! 🙂

Montana Prime Rib Steak, etc. 🙂

S & R Davao City

This store is like a small Walmart. Or Sam’s Club in the U.S. But you’d know you’re still in the Philippines because of the loud music. And people with carts, parking in the middle of the lane to chat. 🙂

And of course, there’s no self check out counter. Believe me, I was so amazed by that the first time I saw one. Won’t work in our country because not everyone has a credit card or debit card. Plus of course, there will be a small percentage who will leave without paying. ha ha

S & R Davao Branch is located at the Corner of Maa and Mc Arthur Highway. It is just across NCCC Mall.

To become a member, you have to bring 2 valid government identification cards. And like I said, pay a membership fee of P700.00 .

I got a copy of the Membership Form but I am thinking of going back there in about 2 months. Maybe the line won’t be that long anymore by then. 🙂

Hopefully, they have more products also that time. You know, like Pillsbury Biscuits or Cinnamon Rolls? Ten minutes in the oven and you have melted cinnamon rolls in your mouth.  Ahh… that would be a dream come true. 🙂

Getting To Know The Mayor of Davao City

I found this article in Facebook. I thought of reposting this so you will know the man behind the name. Digong refers to Davao City Mayor, Rodrigo R. Duterte. What you will read below is exactly the reason why he always wins “landslide” in previous elections. And this latest election, he had no opponent.  This is also the reason why I am his number 1 fan. 🙂

Rodrigo R. Duterte, Mayor of Davao City.

Rodrigo R. Duterte, Mayor of Davao City.

A night of fright reveals a virtue of Digong

By Jun Ledesma

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

THE heavy downpour last June 5 gave a strong signal that rainy season is around. In fact, it did not come gently. The cloudbursts bathed Davao City with an unusually copious volume of rain that rendered many parts of the city impassable to small vehicles and inaccessible to pedestrians.

That rainy Wednesday night would just have been one of those evenings for incoming City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte. The come-backing mayor is known to be a night owl. He prowls the city streets hoping to catch his prey of criminals among them drug pushers, snatchers, robbers, and other menace of society. He does this nightly to keep city residents safe no matter what the weather is. Never did he realize that in that evening will be part of an unforgettable episode to a distress young mother which he encountered that rainy eve.

June 5, 2013 to a mother of four is a night to remember. Annelyn Pongase Paunon earlier went shopping at Gaisano Mall for the school needs of her kids. Because she cannot not leave her toddler child, she tucked the baby with her and off they went to the mall. The weather was not as sunny then but there was no indication of a heavy downpour.

Night caught up with them at the mall not realizing that the light rain that come with dusk took a violent turn. When they decided it was time to go home they looked and waited for a taxi. But everyone else was looking for a cab which had become scarce as flood waters in most of the thoroughfares were no longer “navigable.”

Annelyn started to be panicky. She had three small children in tow and a baby which she held close to provide warmth. By 11 p.m. there were no cabs in sight. The kids were jittery and Annelyn was as nervous. Tugging the children, she decided to make a dash to San Pedro Hospital hoping some patients might have taken a taxi to get to the hospital. They braved the rain and the rising water. Before they can make it across however, a black D’Max stopped right in front of them. The occupant on the front seat rolled down the tinted window. “Asa man mo?” The man on the front seat asked.

Annely replied: “Sa Skyline pa mi,” she replied to the stranger.

The man in the black pick-up then told her in a much louder voice: “Sakay na kay ihatud ta mo sa Skyline.”

Annelyn hesitated for a moment. She looked closer to the stranger who offered her the ride and recognizing who was the Good Samaritan she exclaimed: “Ay si Mayor diay!”

Annelyn and her children packed themselves on the back seat. She felt relieved she has a ride to take them home and safe and secured it was no less than incoming Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who will be conducting them all the way to Skyline.

The pick-up inched its way through the flooded street. But at the corner of Guerrero St. traffic was snarled and then went on a standstill. The Mayor and an aid alighted from the vehicle to man the traffic. He knew that it will take time to deal with the traffic jam, he directed his driver to take Annelyn and her kids to the doorsteps of their home at the Skyline and then to just come back for him.

Safe in the comfort of her home, Annelyn started to email friends about her unforgettable experience and encounter with Mayor Duterte. She can only imagine how the mayor was manning the traffic under the rain. She felt guilty she was not able to thank him enough. Then she remembered, she has a friend whose father is a journalist. She wanted to tell the world how caring is the Mayor of Davao City and how he dispenses his own comfort to extend help to the helpless.

This is her story in a capsule as told to my daughter Kristine.
