WHERE TO EAT:

There are so many restaurants you can choose from in Davao. If you like chicken bbq – options would be: Mang Inasal, Banok’s , Patok Sa Manok and Kulasa’s (walking distance from where the parade ends. It’s just at the back of the Sangguniang Panlungsod in San Pedro St.)

If you like pasta and pizza, I know for sure that Boyd’s (Palma Gil St., Bo. Obrero) will have an eat all you can buffet during this time at Php199.00 per head. I asked because I have nephews who will be celebrating Kadayawan sa Dabaw there. LOL

Speaking of an Eat All You Can buffet,  the food at Grand Menseng Hotel is good. You might want to check that out. Across the street, there’s Kuya Ed’s which offers a cheaper option. Near Apo View Hotel, there’s Greenhills Restaurant . They also offer an eat all you can buffet.  For those who prefer a high end buffet, then I would recommend Marco Polo. Their chef is good. With the many options on the buffet table, you won’t get hungry. hehe

If you like chinese food, then Dencia’s would be the best option since it’s just walking distance from the floral float parade.

Dinner time, I would head towards Times Beach. The sea breeze is cooler and the food is great at FM Eatery. I love their Tinolang Isda (tuna). They also have Tuna Panga. Grilled Pork Chop and Chicken BBQ. Our family usually go there after visiting the Agri Trade Fair at the back of SM. 🙂

MUST VISIT PLACES:

If you have 2 to 3 days to spare, try visiting the following:

Jack’s Ridge (night time) – you’ll love the fresh air and the panoramic view of Davao City

Eden Nature Park  – https://leawalkerblog.com/2011/09/03/a-place-called-eden/

Samal Island – never miss Samal while you’re in Davao. It’s just a 15min ride by ferry. Places to go include: white sand beaches, monfort bat cave, Hagimit falls, Maxima Aqua Fun, Pearl Farm. There are buses from Davao to Samal so it’s very convenient to go there these days.

Buda – short for “Bukidnon-Davao” , has a lot of things to offer. You can visit Epol Water Falls or dip at the pool of Seagull Mountain Resort. You can also buy fresh strawberries in Buda. If you want to commune with nature , that’s where I would go. I’d be happily sitting beside the road, munching on fruits while smelling the fresh, cold air… 🙂

ADVENTURES:

Zipline – Outlaud Extreme Adventure – Diversion Road, Davao City

White Water Rafting – do your bookings at the crocodile farm in Maa

GIFT SHOPS:

For pasalubongs, go to Aldevinco Shopping Center along C.M. Recto St. It’s just across Marco Polo Hotel so it’s not difficult to find it. If you need money exchange too, this is the place to go for  a higher rate.

If you have more questions, just feel free to drop me a line or two. 🙂 I’ll try to help.

REMINDER:

Davao is a non-smoking city. So please do not smoke in public. 🙂

Davao’s Black Taxi

Yes, Davao made it to the news again! 🙂

Mabuhay just recently released black taxis in Davao City with GPS and atm/debit card facilities through Bancnet and Megalink.

Sosyal  jud ang Davao! Grabe… 🙂

When Mayor Sara Duterte posted it in facebook, I felt really happy. The GPS device will track down the location of the taxi. Making it safe for the passengers. Since the company now has a way of knowing where the taxi went to.

Plus, with the ATM/debit card facility, drivers can no longer overcharge. This high tech system has a uniform flag down rate. And is being monitored by Mabuhay. Therefore, if you’re a newbie in Davao, with Mabuhay’s black taxi, you know that you were charged the right amount. 🙂

I’d like to point out though that our taxi drivers are more honest than most cities in the country. They’re very careful of overcharging, etc. Because our vice mayor, Rody Duterte, rides in taxis at nights and makes sure he knows what’s going on in the City. Therefore, taxi drivers in Davao can’t fool around.

Believe me, you don’t want our vice mayor , getting mad at you. 🙂 He loves Davao and loves Dabawenyos, but let him catch you red-handed and you’re in trouble. All of us know that here. That’s why Davao is “uber safe”, so to speak. 🙂

NOTES TO CONSIDER:

The theory is that black cars absorb more heat. In effect, the taxi’s aircon will have to work harder. Therefore, the taxi will use more diesel/gasoline. Of course, fossil fuel is not good for our environment. Maybe Mabuhay would choose lighter colors in their next purchase? 🙂

Also, be careful in using your debit card. What I don’t like about it is that sometimes, when the line is down, the system can charge you double on the same transaction. Therefore my suggestion is that, keep your receipt and check online the moment you get home if the charges are ok.  If you see double charges, email your bank immediately for record purposes. And visit the local branch the next day. The refund takes time. But you will surely get your money back.

Other than those issues above, I am so glad about this new development in Davao. 🙂

Mabuhay Dabaw!

You make me proud for being a Davaoena…

Best Nachos in Davao

I got an invitation to check out Patio De Murell in Palma Gil St., I remember being so happy about it. As a blogger, it’s nice to know that people actually read my blog. he he.. I know that my family and my best friends are my loyal readers. (Thank you!)  But an invite coming from someone else, I was ecstatic!

So John and I went to check the place one Saturday night. But since we’re not much of a night prowler, we invited our friends Ruby and Skip, to join us. Like us, they don’t go out that much too. So we thought, it’s a good opportunity to get together and have a fun Saturday night. 🙂

We all had dinner first in a restaurant within the same compound as Patio De Murell. The food is just so-so . And for the price, it’s not really worth it. Sorry…

Ok, we’re done eating. So let’s proceed to the bar, I said. But err.. it rained! haha.. It’s a good thing that it stopped after a few minutes. Thank God! I thought I was being jinxed for being so overly excited about it. ha ha..

Patio De Murell is owned by a Filipina, Ferlie Ann Murell. She’s married to a foreigner. Thus the family name Murell. And the name of the bar.

And yes, there are many foreigners in Davao. I told you it’s safe living and doing business here! Don’t believe everything you read in the paper. Sometimes, it’s exaggerated. Ahh.. but then again, I’m sure you know all that too. 🙂

When we arrived, I looked for Jong Menchavez. A few seconds later, Jong came with Ferlie. We chatted for awhile. Then Ferlie said, you should try our Nachos. That’s our specialty here. On the house.

Ok, when it was delivered by the waiter to our table, we couldn’t stop munching it. I am not kidding when I say, I will go back there just for the nachos! That’s how good it is. I found out that theirs is homemade and fresh from the kitchen. So that explains it, I thought…

Patio De Murell’s Nachos. Best tasting nachos I’ve ever had.

I guess, you just have to try it . So you will understand what I’m talking about. hehe

Ruby and I am not much of drinker. We both felt that our faces were flushed and red after less than a glass of blue margarita.

But it didn’t stop us from eating more of the nachos. And drinking a lot of water.

I will never be a bar hopper but I’m glad that I accepted the invitation because I’ve gained new friends with Jong and Ferlie. Plus I got to taste their homemade nachos.

Patio De Murell is located at:

Brick Lane Square , Cor. Palma Gil and Guzman Streets, Bo. Obrero, Dvo City

Tel. No. 2957531

They’re open from 5pm to 2am. Mondays to Saturdays.

Patio De Murell, serves both Filipino and Mexican Food.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines – Samar and Leyte

For my second installment of the series, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”, let me introduce you to the provinces of Samar and Leyte, known to be the Twin Islands of the Pacific.

Both provinces have great history but there’s very few written about it online.

John and I was given the chance to see both during our Philippine Road Trip. Yes, we did this on our own, with John driving. Of course, we slept in hotels at nights and start again after breakfast. Never have we felt unsafe on the road despite the fact that the place had a lot of undeveloped area. Honestly, that’s what gave Samar and Leyte its mystique. Their untouched beauty.

I saw beautiful sea and mountain landscapes that makes the Philippines a great place for a vacation, specially if one’s purpose is to enjoy nature at its best.

More than that, both provinces like I said have rich history. In fact, artifacts like ceramics, gold jewelries, large earthware jars have been found there. It is believed to be coming from traders in Siam , Vietnam and China which dates back to as far as the 13th century.

Landmarks such as Mc Arthur’s Landing and San Juanico bridge are the most famous among the many destinations you can choose from. Both of those places were discussed in our history books in elementary. So it was a great experience for me when I saw both. Infact I felt so blessed that I was given the chance to see them in my lifetime. 🙂

To The People of the Philippines, “I have returned” , by the grace of the Almighty, was the start of Gen. Douglas Mc Arthur’s speech at the historic site in Leyte.

With a total length of 2.16 kilometers (1.34 mi), it is the longest bridge in the Philippines spanning a body of seawater.

It was said to have been presented as a Gift and “Testimonial of Love” by the Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos to the first lady, Imelda, a native of Leyte.

OTHER SCENERIES IN SAMAR AND LEYTE:

I took this picture on July , 2010. I loved it then and now. It just looked so peaceful and beautiful to me.

Beautiful landscape in Samar, Leyte.

The Sto. Nino church in Tacloban, Leyte.

The market beside the beach in Tacloban, Leyte.

OTHER THINGS TO DO IN SAMAR AND LEYTE:

The website, http://www.flyphilippines.com.ph/leyte/info.php, has a lot of featured articles on what you can do in Samar and Leyte.

HOW TO GO THERE:

Cebu Pacific,http://www.cebupacificair.com/Pages/default.aspx , has several flights from Manila to Tacloban, Leyte. From there, you can take a bus or jeepneys to your point of destination.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines (Part 1)

To borrow the phrase of our Department of Tourism’s ad campaign “it’s more fun in the Philippines, I would like to share with you a series of pictures of all the historic, famous landmarks and beautiful spots I’ve visited in our country over the past years. 🙂

Hopefully, my Filipino friends would start checking them out. And for foreigners who plan on visiting the Philippines, come and enjoy what our country has to offer. I know there are bad publicities about our country specially in Mindanao where Davao is a part of and where I live. But that’s just that, publicities. True, there are shady and dangerous areas, which even I would not dare to go. But those places don’t even represent 10% of our country!

Today, I am starting with the Philippine’s perfect cone – Mt. Mayon .

Mt. Mayon located in Albay, Philippines.

I took  this  photo of Mt. Mayon in 2010 during our Philippine Road Trip. I wrote about this here:

        https://leawalkerblog.com/2011/09/25/philippine-road-trip-day-1/

        https://leawalkerblog.com/2011/09/26/philippine-road-trip-day-2/

 From Wikipedia:

Mayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon, is an active volcano in the province of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the “perfect cone” because of its almost symmetric conical shape, Mayon forms the northern boundary of Legazpi City, the largest city in terms of population in the Bicol Region. The mountain is a national park and a protected landscape in the country proclaimed as Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000.[3]

Local folklore refers to the volcano as Bulkang Magayon (Bikol: ‘Beautiful Volcano’), after the legendary heroine Daragang Magayon (Bikol: ‘Beautiful Lady’).[4]

Mayon Volcano is the main landmark of Albay Province, Philippines, rising 2,462 metres (8,077 ft) from the shores of the Gulf of Albay about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away.[5][6] The volcano is geographically shared by the cities and municipalities of Legazpi City, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Tabaco City, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo (clockwise from Legazpi) which divide the cone like slices of a pie when viewed from above.

HOW TO GO THERE:

Airlines like Cebu Pacific (www.cebupacificair.com) has several trips to Albay coming from Manila.

Like I said, we did a roadtrip in 2010. The roads are concrete and it is safe! John just bought a Philippine map and we just followed it till we arrived in Davao. 🙂 Man, that was one of the best experiences I had…

WHAT TO DO IN ALBAY:

The website, http://wowlegazpi.com/, shares a lot about the Province of Albay. 🙂

So what are you waiting for? Plan your trip now and enjoy our country! 🙂

A Beautiful Sunrise…

I took this photo on Easter morning this year at a resort in Aundanao, Island Garden City of Samal.

It made me wonder how can one not believe in God when one is given this kind of beauty for free.

I felt so blessed seeing this beautiful sunrise…

A New Life…

Wow, the past week has been a difficult journey for me. I’ve been to the hospital and back due to abnominal pains. I’ll share this with you, hopefully to help those who have the same concern.

June 8 – I was brought to the emergency for severe stomach pains. I was given Buscopan through IV. Since it didn’t work, I was given Ranitidine and Ketorolac after an hour or so. I felt better afterwards. So the doctors allowed me to go home. With prescriptions for an antibiotic, pain reliever and to get an ultrasound.

June 9 – John and I went back to DMSF hospital for an ultrasound. When the result came back,  it said that I had “cholelithiasis” , a gallstone the size of 1.4cm. It also said that I had fatty livers. I’ve known about the gallstone a year ago when I had a physical exam. But since, I never had stomach pains I thought that with medication, it would dissolve. I was wrong. Infact, it grew by .3cm.

Ok, so someone told me to try apple juice and eating apples everyday so the gallstone will pass. I did that. For 3-5 days.

June 10 – We went to our family doctor and I was told that I had peptic ulcer also. So I was given medication for both the gallstone and the ulcer.

I felt a little better during those times . Life went to normal and I went back to working.

June 12 – A client arrived from Malaysia. Sometime during the day, my stomach started to bother me again. My client who has become a friend over the years told me to go home so I can rest. But I told her that we should finish everything we needed to do because she’ll be in Davao for a few days only.

June 13 – I felt better.

June 14 – We were in Samal island. John and I had to oversee the works on the new property we just bought. At 10 am, my stomach started hurting again. This time with severe headache (forehead and back side) and neckpains including my jaw and cheekbones.

Inday, a friend , gave me buscopan tablets. After trying those, I felt better. So John and I bought 10 more , just incase the pain comes back again. During that day, I took 4 more buscopans, (2 in the afternoon and 2 in the evening).

June 15 – We went back to our family doctor once again. This time he told me to get the surgery. Obviously, the pain has made my blood pressure shoot up to 160/100. Pain does that too! So that’s why I had a terrible headache yesterday, I thought.

June 16 – I felt better. So I went to work again. 🙂 I had this “stupid thought” in my mind that I’m ok so I should not go to the hospital. Maybe, it will get better with the medicines I’m taking.

But just incase I needed a surgery, we went to meet the surgeon who will do a laparoscopic operation on me. He also mentioned that I should have an endoscopy so they will know how severe the ulcers are.

I remember saying that if the pain won’t go away in the next few days, I’ll have surgery on Wednesday, 20th day of June.

June 17 – Sunday morning, I was ok. Then lunchtime came. John and I ate at Pancake House. I ordered hot choco and pancakes. Very wrong move. On our way to Samal Island with our clients, I had another attack. My staff told me to sit when she saw me looking pale. John said that I should just rest and let the staff do the works. I thought we shouldn’t have come to Samal today. 😦

By 4pm, on our way home, I started vomitting. John packed our bags and he admitted me to the hospital.

The surgeon and his team met with us that night. And explained that they will do the endoscopy by 7:30am, the next day. And the cholecystectomy by 9am. The lap-chole takes about 45mins to a maximum of 2 hours he said.

I felt better that night because I was given a pain reliever through  dextrose.

June 18 – I was put to sleep by my anaesthician, Dr. Lamansala, for the endoscopy. Dr. Lasala, the gastro enterologist did the endoscopy. The last thing I remembered was when they put something on my mouth where the tube with a camera will go in. I woke up after the endoscopy and I remembered John holding my hands going to the operating room. Then I was put to sleep again.

When I woke up, we were already in the suite room we reserved. I felt dizzy and weak. But I was glad that I woke up. 🙂 That was my fear in the past. That you know, I won’t wake up after the surgery. I thank God for another extension of my life.

My sister, Pearlie told me that John hasn’t had breakfast and lunch yet. He couldn’t eat because the operation took more than 3 hours. He kept on saying, that the doctor said that it will be for 2 hours only.

Dr. Batucan, my surgeon, explained that my gallbladder already had an abscess. They had to drain all the pus before they could take off the gall bladder. Plus the 1.4cm gall stone was stuck in my cystic duct.

If I waited a few more days, the gall bladder would have ruptured. And that would have been the end of me. Tsk.. tsk.. Kamuntik na talaga pala ako. I’m just glad that it wasn’t my time yet…

MY REALIZATIONS:

   1. I should never have taken the apple juice and ate the apples. True, those help. But when you have a small cystic duct and a big gallstone, it doesn’t work.  It put my life in danger. So I will never, ever medicate on my own again.

2. Hoping that it will go away is a stupid thing to say when it comes to one’s health. Never make the same mistake I did. I’m just glad that we went to the hospital on Sunday and not on Wednesday as scheduled or I would not be around to tell the tale today.

3. Don’t be stubborn. I was. And it almost killed me.

This has been a lesson learned for me. That you know, life is fleeting. And I should take better care of my health. And also, if your  job gives you ulcers, then it’s not worth it. Life is more important than all the money in the world.

I am recovering now. I still feel nauseaus and my stomach gets queasy from time to time. But it’s a lot better than  the pain I felt 2 weeks ago. I am still on medication and will be for awhile, specially for my ulcers and the blood pressure.

I am Php216,084.00 ($5,025.00) poorer. But I look at it both ways. I paid a high price for my stubborness. Or I paid a small price for another extension of my life.

I’ll concentrate on the latter. 🙂 Because God gave me a new lease on life….

Thank God.

—————————————————

Thank you to my friends and colleagues who brought me flowers and fruits at the hospital. To Mita, for the cute little teddy bear too. 🙂

To my sister Pearlie and my family, for helping John in taking care of me.

To the nurses and my doctors, thank you.

And most of all to John, who never left my side. He hates hospitals and doesn’t like to be admitted when he gets sick. But he stayed there for days with me.  Love you.

And to all who prayed for me, daghang salamat. Thank you very much!
