JP Coleman State Park

I must have said this a million times. One of the best things I love about America is their parks. Be it a State or a National Park. It’s mostly free but they take care of it as if their life depended on it. I find that so amazing. How I wish that my country would take care of our nature more.

Another park we visited while we were in the US last year was JP Coleman State Park in Mississippi. This park is overlooking the Tennessee River. And with its fall foliage, the view was fantastic.

I was so surprised that there’s no one there. I saw empty cottages near the river and cabins around the park. I realized that most people visit this park during summer because of its numerous activities. It was nice though because it brought us peace and quiet. 🙂

Let me take you down memory lane….

If what you are looking for is R & R, this park is perfect during fall season. It really feels like you own the place. 🙂 You can fish, walk or jog, read a book, go boating or yachting, picnic… Doesn’t that sound so relaxing? That is why I look forward to roadtrips, be it in the Philippines or in the US. It helps me to appreciate nature in all its beauty.

As we were about to leave, two people arrived and took their boat from the marina. I wondered if they caught something. I’m sure they did. The Tennessee river is famous for their large catfish or small mouth bass. Ha, I remember how astounded I was when John told me that we needed a fishing permit before we could go fishing. That just doesn’t happen in the Philippines. he he

Doesn’t this look gorgeous?!

And this?

If you can see the high resolution copies of these pictures, believe me you too would fall inlove with the place. But still, even those can never compensate to standing there and watching this pretty sight…

My dates on that day were John and mommy. She’s the main reason why we keep going back to the US. To visit her as often as we can. And spend time with her, as much as we can.

And of course, this is me. To prove that I was really there. ha ha…  With my orange jacket, I fit perfectly with JP Coleman State Park’s fall foliage. lol

I have that grin again! You know, that “I’m so amazed grin”… Mababaw lang kasi kaligayahan ko. So there… 🙂

Hometown Restaurant and Buffet

We were passing by Marfori Subdivision, coming from Maa on our way to downtown, when we saw this new restaurant. What caught my attention was the sign that said – Western and Filipino Food for P99.00 .

We’ve seen signs before that said the same but I find it funny when John and I realize what their so-called western food are. lol

Out of curiosity, we stopped and checked the place. The interior is very simple. If you are looking for a high end restaurant, then this place isn’t it. But it was clean. And the food was hot. That matters to me. And for the price of P199 for a lunch buffet , I think it was ok.

I took some sample photos of the food on display:

Mashed Potato with brown gravy.

Sweet & Sour Chicken (Top) . Pork Afritada (Bottom).

They also served hot steamed rice and garlic rice. Dessert served were fresh fruits.

What we would like to go back to is their breakfast buffet. Yes, I’m referring to the P99 buffet I mentioned above.

Here’s a list of what it consist of:

* French Toast

* Pancakes

* Hotdog

* Sausage Patty with White Gravy

* Scrambled Eggs

* Cream Beef over toasted bread

* Fried Potatoes

* Steamed/Garlic Rice

And for dessert, they offer fresh fruits.

Sounds good for a P99 pesos buffet breakfast huh?! 🙂

They serve burgers and sandwiches as well. We ordered their sliders “to go”.  And guess what, it’s so far the best mini burger I had.  It actually tasted as good as it looks!

I seldom eat burgers, unless John makes them, because most of what’s available here aren’t good.  You know, other than being oily. It has more fat content than meat. But the sliders we ordered from Hometown is really delicious.

They offer an ala carte dinner. But that is something I will write again, after we’ve tried it. 🙂

Hometown Restaurant and Buffet is located at Corner Ruby and Turquoise St., Marfori Subdivision, Davao City. They can be contacted through Tel. No. 300-8309. They are open from 8am to 8pm on Mondays until Saturdays. And from 11am to 7pm on Sundays.

Pearl Farm – A birthday treat …

No it’s not my birthday. 🙂  It was John’s . We had a simple celebration with the family and I booked for an overnight stay at Pearl Farm in Samal Island.

We’ve been there several times on a day tour. But have never slept there at all. I thought, it would be nice to cap the event with a restful stay at one of the best beach resorts in the island.

We left the party around 5:30 in the afternoon. There was no rush we thought. From our nipa hut in Mambago , Pearl Farm was about 10 or so kilometers only. What we forgot to consider was that it gets dark early these days.  Without clear signages going to the resort, it was difficult to find it. Plus of course, the road is rough. Yep, that’s the reason why most visitors go there by boat.

After almost an hour on a dirt road and  of treading slowly on a downhill slope, we finally reached Pearl Farm.

The moment we arrived, everything changed. Instantly. The tiredness from the day’s activities just seemed to vanish. We were assisted immediately and given an instruction where to park. Then we were picked up from the parking space by their driver and brought to the information area. Upon arrival, a fresh towel was given to us and a glass of fresh pineapple juice.

Check in was fast and efficient. I just presented my Agoda voucher. And voila, everything’s set. The driver then brought us to the Samal House. Our home for the night. This stealth cottage is made of bamboo and wood but has a nice finish, comfortable king size bed and a separate toilet and bathroom. It’s right on the clear waters of Samal Island, so one could hear the gentle splashes of island waves. The light’s reflection on the water looked so beautiful.

Pearl Farm, Samal House

After settling in, we walked back to the restaurant. Since we were still full from the party earlier, we just opted to buy some drinks and listened to the singers serenading the guests.

Pearl Farm, Samal Island

The infinity pool near the restaurant looked radiant in the dark. Some people had fun swimming while we contented ourselves by sitting beside the beach. A peaceful end to a happy day, I thought. 🙂

***************************************

The combination of pink and orange hues greeted me the next day. It was as if someone painted the sky with water colors and left its glowing reflection against the calm blue sea.

Pearl Farm IMG_6138 - Copy IMG_6139 - Copy

Beautiful right? Imagine seeing that. Then listen to the lulling sound of the waves while watching the school of colorful fishes under the cottage.  Wonderful feeling huh?! 🙂 That’s what Pearl Farm is all about…. The atmosphere is all about relaxation. And so your mind is conditioned to take a break, first and foremost. Then your body just starts to calm down and loosen up. As you start to unwind, you savor the whole experience and enjoy every bit of it. At least that’s how it felt to me… 🙂

Another thing I love about Pearl Farm is their buffet. We’ve tried their lunch in the past and it didn’t disappoint. Infact, the friends we were with before, laughed and jokingly said that they would like to marry the chef. ha ha…

Breakfast was the same. The buffet consisted of bacon and a long list of western and Filipino cuisine. There was an egg counter , cereal counter, salad and fruit bar, dessert counter, several types of bread, pancakes and waffles. You won’t get hungry. That’s for sure!

But most of all, I welcomed the dried “pusit” . 🙂

Pearl Farm Pearl Farm, Maranao restaurant

The day tour visitors normally arrive between 10 to 11am.  So I suggest that you start swimming, either in their 3 infinity pools or the beach, early. That way, you don’t get to share such with the crowd. I have nothing against a big crowd. But I would prefer to enjoy the place while I can in silence.  I think as I grew older, I’ve become more boring. ha ha

Getting Lost in Samal Island, Tagbaobo Falls and More….

The day started when John asked me where I wanted to go. I remember saying, I don’t know. And that I would be happy to sit somewhere and just relax….

We have been on the go for weeks now. And I am exhausted.

Then he asked me if I wanted to go to Samal. I said yeah. There’s this road somewhere in Anonang that we have always wanted to check. But everytime we go to the island, it is always about work. So playing wasn’t possible.  Today, that thought is going to get satisfied. 🙂

After a delicious breakfast at Pancake House, we left for Samal. The trip was uneventful. And in less than 10 minutes, we were at the Port of Babak already. The ride to Anonang was easy since the national highway is already concrete. But the road we wanted to check was unpaved. And narrow. I kinda worried because we haven’t been in this part of the island yet. And I wondered how safe it would be. But then again, nothing happens in Samal right? It’s one of the safest places I know. What was I thinking?! lol

I guess it’s the road to the unknown that unsettled and bothered me, more than anything else.

After 10 or so kilometers on a rough road, a big ricefield greeted us. But what I like the most were the carabaos on the other side of the road, swimming in a big pond. 🙂

IMG_5874

As we proceeded, we saw a small town. I asked someone where this road leads to and we were told that it goes back to Penaplata if we turn left. And to Kaputian if we turn right. And that we are now in Brgy. Tagbaobo.  Someone mentioned that we should proceed to Tagbaobo Falls first before going back. 🙂 It’s not far from where we were and just about a 100 meters or so from the road.

Of course, we weren’t gonna  go back without seeing it! 🙂 I’ve heard so much of Tagbaobo Falls but have never been there.

After saying thank you, we proceeded to the falls.

These people harvesting copra along the road , got my attention.  🙂

IMG_5875

And then we saw this short paved road. Just before reaching Tagbaobo Falls.  I really don’t know why we have that in the Philippines. You know, short paved roads in the middle of nowhere? lol

IMG_5878

Finally, we have arrived.

IMG_5880

I stopped at this nipa hut and asked how safe and how far it is going to the falls. The incharge, Manong Erning Pedrosa, told me that it was a short walk going down and it is safe. After paying the entrance fee of P40.00 and the community tax of P5.00 per head, he assisted us going to the falls.

IMG_5914IMG_5916

The Trail To Tagbaobo Falls:

One, you need to wear a pair of walking shoes. Meaning, no high heeled shoes. 🙂 Or you’d be like Jack and Jill who went tumbling down the hill. ha ha

Two, there are huge “balete trees”, which reminded me of the banyan trees in Cambodia. So if you do not like those, then don’t go or it would creep you out. 🙂

It was eerie and very quiet. I thought of “engkanto” as we walked through the forest. But I kept on talking to Manong Erning to fill the silence. And to keep my mind from wandering to ghost stories. ha ha ha

IMG_5883

Then I could hear it… The sound of the water falls. 🙂 Ahhh…. music to my ears.

A few more steps passing through those huge tree roots, I finally saw Tagbaobo Falls. It is higher than Hagimit Falls, that’s for sure. But since it’s been raining, the water wasn’t that clear. Manong Erning said that when the weather is okay, we can see the bottom. Tagbaobo Falls isn’t that deep. It’s just more or less 5 ft. So it is perfect for swimming.

IMG_5903

The community incharge made rails and chairs out of bamboos. So those who want to go down can just sit and wade their feet in the cold water. I should have but didn’t. I was happy enough to just watch it from where I was standing. Maybe next time when the water is clearer. 🙂

IMG_5891

IMG_5901

John was chilling in the bamboo bench. 🙂 I sat beside him and took photos of the trees above us.

IMG_5902

After almost an hour  of listening to birds chirping and listening to the waterfalls gently roaring,  it was time for us to go. It was cool under the shade of the trees and the soothing breeze made it all the more relaxing to us. It was indeed, difficult to leave…..

Going back up:

I had John stand beside one of the big trees near the falls.

To my pinoy readers, remember to say “tabi tabi po”. 🙂 That means, excuse me, to my foreign readers.

When we were children, stories say that there are beings living in those Balete Trees. And they do not like it when you step on them or disturb their peace. So according to our ancestors, people die for an unknown reason, because those beings got mad and taught humans the lesson of respect.

Whether that myth is real or not, it’s better to be safe than be sorry right?

IMG_5894

IMG_5905 IMG_5906

Yes, we walked through the roots of the trees. I think the roots make trekking a lot easier. Specially during rainy season.

I wonder what kind of berries are these? 🙂

IMG_5907

The Balete Trees. I told you they are there. 🙂

IMG_5909 IMG_5908

Here’s John checking on me. And telling me to watch where I’m walking. hahaha… I don’t seem to notice anything when I have my camera with me. lol

 IMG_5910

The view on top. Beautiful right?

We’re at the back of Samal now. So the mountain view beyond the gulf is that of Davao Oriental.

IMG_5912

No, we’re not done yet. ha ha

The trip to Penaplata took about 30 mins. Still on an unpaved road. John didn’t mind driving in it because he’s happy with the new 4×4 car. It helps.

Before proceeding to Mambago, I asked John to drive us back to the farm land that was offered to us. There was something I wanted to double check. It was funny when we ran into this cow.  Or should I say when he run into us. lol

He screeched… And got shy.

IMG_5922

John told him that it’s okay to pass. ha ha ha

The two of them looked so cute…. lol

IMG_5923

Before going home, we passed by our Mambago A property. I think I told you before that I love this place. 🙂

I was happy to see these flowers growing…

IMG_5872

IMG_5924

I got some jackfruits coming up… haha

jackfruit

A stolen shot of John looking at the view.

IMG_5927

And of course, I got to sit on the field. Just doing nothing… 🙂

IMG_5930

The backdrop is that of Davao Gulf, Pearl Farm and Talicud island. If you go to Penaplata coming from Babak Poblacion, this is just along the National highway on a concrete road. If you want to stop by, just let me know. We have free buko for friends. 🙂

I think I told you before already, that between going to the malls and spending time with nature, I’d choose the latter anytime. I’d like to thank God for giving me a husband who feels the same way. It’s such a simple thing to do, but we both loved our day in Samal.

On our way home, the sunset reflection on the sea looked beautiful.

IMG_5933 - Copy

So now, I can start working again. I feel recharged all over again. 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day

I wrote this poem almost 20 years ago for my mama. I am sharing this to all the mothers in the world who deserve to be honored, not just today but everyday of their lives.

I love you ma.

MAMA

In your womb, you carried me
For years, you cared for me
You’ve been the light of us all
And our shelter from the storm…

At times, when I made mistakes
You comfort me with your embrace
Then pat my back and say
“Move on, my child and be strong”.
Now, as I spread my wings
I know you’re just there
Silently praying,
Steadfastly believing….

And so i’d like the world to know
How proud I am of you
That I wouldn’t be where I am now
If not because of you…

So let this poem be a gift
A thanksgiving for everything you did
Not only to me but for all,
Whose lives you’ve touched and blessed….

Brown Out, Black Out.. Whatever!

I apologize for having been remissed on my blog. I had an operation last March and was ordered by my doctor to rest for a month. So I have been taking things easy since then.

The reason why I am writing today is the fact that I am so pissed off, like everyone else in Davao City these days, about the 6 to 7.5 hours of black outs. Yes you read that right, 6 to 7.5 hours per day. Unbelievable right?! But there it is, the incompetence of the government to mandate the power companies to serve the people better.

According to our local provider, Davao Light and Power Company, the National Power Corporation reduced again the supply for Mindandao. Therefore, they have no control over this issue –  http://www.davaolight.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1979:revised-rotating-power-interruption-schedule&catid=124:april14&Itemid=142

“This is way lower than the Davao Light’s contracted supply with NPC of 280 MW, ” according to the news.

I am wondering,

a) how does NAPOCOR , get away with not following the contract they agreed and signed with DLPC?

b) how come Davao Light and Power Company did not prepare the people for this problem? Seriously… I assume they know that this is gonna happen months ago right? It is not right for them to just spring this on us during the hottest time of the year. Our car registered a high of 40’c / 104’f  a couple of weeks ago. Doesn’t that sound fishy and too convenient?

Ok so the powers that be in my country are saying that this is due to the decrease of  supply in its hydro plants. All right, I get that. But this is just my two cents, the National Power Company should have maintained, prepared and installed other means to counter these problems. They could have added more hydro powers somewhere in the Philippines. Or they could have tapped the natural gas supply found in Mindanao. Also, we have active volcanoes. Why not tap them for geothermal power?

But no, we were told that Mindanao should pay a higher rate or suffer for the rotating black outs. Question – how does paying more help? Does this mean that this was a plan after all? That if we don’t pay the higher cost, they won’t follow the agreement of “280 MW power supply?

Err… doesn’t that sound like a blackmail or an extortion? Tsk.. tsk.. Only in the Philippines.

DLPC on the other hand built a coal plant months ago. So I guess this is their way of preparing the people for a power rate hike. I wonder how much. Let’s see when they open it up come December. I am sure it won’t be cheap as coal supplies will come from … China? Yes, that’s what the news says. And you know these days, China and the Philippines are not in good terms due to  Spratly’s island. Bleak outlook in other words for Mindanaoans and Davaoenos. Sucks to be us huh?!

You know I love Davao. And I love Mindanao. But right now, I am not liking where we are going. The government’s inefficiency to  protect the people from greedy corporations is such a let down. 😦 Breaks my heart to realize that we are just really a pawn, who are supposed to follow what Manila dictates.

This problem could have been prevented by preparing  and installing better means to get more than enough power supply. But no, planning and preparation are useless words for Filipinos. It is easy to just do some repairs after all. You know, the money can just go somewhere else.

I feel aggrieved. Specially for all the businessmen in Mindanao. Can you imagine the production lost for a 4-5 hours brown out during peak time? Yes, peak time refers to working time.

The news said that Davao City alone is losing almost P50M per day. That hurts! Specially the small businessmen who are trying to make ends meet. How is this alright?!!!!

And right now, there is no rainbow yet. All we can see is a black tunnel that leads to nowhere.

Hey , someone needs to explain!

I thought the people are the boss of the Philippine administration? How come the people are suffering worst now than before?!

And we can’t even install a generator because this was so sudden, everyone who can afford to buy a generator set came looking all at once. Everyone tells me that it’s out of stock. We have to wait 2 more weeks for new stocks. And of course, pay for a higher price.

How I wish that Davao Light informed the subscribers prior to all this so we could have prepared better.

Honestly, how I wish to be in Alaska or Colorado right now…

And oh, those who plan to have their summer vacation in Mindanao these days, just come prepared. You are  forewarned. 🙂

Maybe you will understand where I am coming from. And why I sound so frustrated. ha ha

Hey Fluffy!

From Wikipedia:

“Gabriel J. Iglecias (born July 15, 1976), known professionally as Gabriel Iglesias and comically as Fluffy, is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer and voice actor. He is known for his shows I’m Not Fat… I’m Fluffy and Hot & Fluffy. He employs storytelling, effected voices and sound effects in his act, whose other trademarks include references to his weight and his use of Hawaiian shirts. He has been called a “comedy genius” by Hector Saldaña of the San Antonio Express-News.”

***************

I am a fan. I’ll just say that right now. ha ha.  John and I  have been watching his shows for about a year already.  And so when I saw  that he has a show in Colorado Springs at the same time we were on our road trip, I grabbed our tickets online immediately. I mean you know Colorado Springs is just a few hours trip from the Rocky Mountains. So why not, right?

We arrived at Colorado Springs late in the afternoon. So we decided to proceed  first at the hotel. Check in at The Marriott was like a breeze. It was fast and so easy. Upon booking, I asked for a room with Pike’s Peak view. And true enough, we were given one. The view was fantastic. 🙂 The room was large, spacious and very clean. It was definitely worth the trip and the cost!

We found out that there’s this steak house nearby that’s supposed to be good but inexpensive. So we went out and tried it.

Dinner was really good. The steak was tender and delicious. I loved their salad too! For $30 ,  (for both John and me), I think it was indeed cheap. The order came with a basket of bread and butter, salad, soup and ice tea.

After dinner, we decided to go back to the hotel, as we were very tired from the long trip.

On our 2nd day in Colorado Springs, we spent most of the day at the Garden of the Gods. (I’ll write about that separately in my next post.)

Around 3pm, we went back to the hotel and prepared for Fluffy’s show.  After an hour or so, we were ready for the show. We left the hotel early so we can have an early dinner before the show starts.

It was supposed to start at 6pm but as early as 5pm, the parking space was already full. When finally the doors of World Arena opened, it took us awhile to get in because of the long line.

The venue was jam-packed. When Fluffy came out, the crowd went wild , started clapping and chanted, Fluffy, fluffy, fluffy….  It gave me goosebumps. 🙂

Then Fluffy started sharing. Some of the jokes he mentioned at first, I saw on TV already. But that night, he also introduced a whole new set of jokes and funny stories. That’s why we were not allowed to video the show. Taking pictures was ok though.

Gabriel Iglesias

Yep, we were sitting in the front row. I think I will not do that next time because we had to look up the stage. That was bad for our necks. lol Despite of it though, we really had fun. We laughed from start to finish.

When the show was over, he said his goodbye to the crowd. But to everyone’s surprise, he came back.  That was so awesome of Gabriel Iglesias to do that. We were told that there was an overtime of one hour. ha ha  It felt like he was just talking to friends. In this case, thousands of friends. lol

This is when someone gave him a drink. He said thank you and drank it.  A lot of people started bringing him more drinks but he said no. Obviously, in his other shows, people bring him cakes, etc. ha ha

I think it is safe to share this – he has at least 600 aloha shirts. Then one night, they thought a burglar was in the house because of the loud noise. It turned out that the built in cabinet broke down due to the heavy collection. LOL

Hey Fluffy

So  that’s me and my date during the show. 🙂

There was an authograph signing and picture taking with Gabriel Iglesias and his group  after the show. But we did not wait for it anymore. Plus I didn’t want to pay 60 dollars to buy souvenirs I don’t need. I told John, I was at the show. And I have pictures. So I’m ok. ha ha

Thank you Fluffy for a very funny night!

Filipino

I have been following seth’s blog for about 2 years now. He first liked my post on Tishomingo State Park in MS, U.S.A. So I checked his blog and found out that he’s a great photographer. Now he’s in the Philippines. Hence, this re-blog of his tribute to Filipinos.

Thank you Seth.
