Northern Mindanao Road Trip – Day 3

I woke up early today.  Perfect, I thought because I wanted to enjoy the sunrise. But it seemed cloudy when I went out of the verandah. Then, a few minutes later, the sky changed its colors. Even if it wasn’t as bright as the previous days,  it was enough to paint the sky blue and peachy. When you’re beside the beach watching this, it seemed so peaceful and glorious.

There weren’t many people out yet. So I was able to enjoy my morning with just the sound of the waves. Beautiful…

About an hour later, everyone woke up including my nephews. I had to wake up John because we were scheduled to ride the glass bottom boat by 8:30am. Right after breakfast. 🙂

Duka Bay Resort offers an extensive buffet breakfast. But it was mostly Filipino food. I enjoyed their “suman” and tsokolate. 🙂

John prefers American breakfast though, that’s why during roadtrips, I make sure to bring Goldilocks Sandwich Bread and Maxwell Coffee. Just in case. 🙂 The restaurant incharge was kind enough to prepare bacon for our table. Believe me, I found that so amazing of Duka Bay’s employees. You get so pampered by their staff.

After eating, we proceeded to their boating and diving area.  This is when we met a Norwegian diver who has been diving in Duka for years. He told us that he really makes it a point to visit the place everytime he’s in the Philippines. I understood why when I was able to talk to their marine biologist.

The cycle..

He explained that during lean season, they put up structures under the sea. And plant more corals. That way, more fishes will have a home. Due to their works, fishing is not allowed in their area. No corals are allowed to leave the premises as well.

Before we boarded the glass bottom boat, one of the staff brought us bread. We were told that while we’re in the coral garden, we will be allowed to feed the fishes.

That was one of the coolest experiences I had.. Ever!

It was an exciting trip for us. With the glass panel at the bottom of the boat, we could see the corals and other sea creatures. Nemo was one of them. And a lot of colorful fishes. 🙂 I also saw blue starfish.

I wish I was able to get better pictures, but I wasn’t. Sorry… 😦  Maybe you would like to experience this for yourselves if and when you come to Mindanao. It is worth the trip.

Even the kids would love the experience. It’s like watching an aquarium but this one is real…

We would have wanted to stay longer but the waves, rocking the boat,  made us a little dizzy. So we went back to the shore after 30 minutes or so.

Duka Bay Resort is located in the town of  Medina, Misamis Oriental. For those coming from Manila, you have an option to arrive in Butuan airport or Cagayan De Oro airport. From there, the trip is more or less 2 hours by land.

Northern Mindanao Roadtrip 2013 – Day 2

For the first time in several months, I slept like a log last night.  That’s the beauty when you’re on vacation, you don’t care about anything else. You get to forget about work and the business. And just have fun for a change… Nice right? 🙂 Thank God!

By the time John and I woke up, breakfast was already served in the restaurant. Yes, Almont Inland Resort has a buffet. And since our booking came with free breakfast, we just headed towards there after shower.

The food choices included Puto Maya and Tsokolate! Believe me, that made me so happy. lol  They had fried rice, chorizo, several kinds of bread, sausage, vegetable and other Chinese food like siomai, etc. . Also, there was an egg counter where you can order the eggs the way you want them to. Almont’s restaurant is like an open clubhouse overlooking the swimming pool. I found that really beautiful.

Puto Maya.

Puto Maya.

We left the resort around 10:30am. Our next destination is Duka Bay Resort in Medina, Misamis Oriental.

Somewhere in between Butuan and Gingoog City.

Somewhere in between Butuan and Gingoog City.

We had a good laugh on our way there when I said – ” I like their roads here. It’s so friendly with all the danger / curve signs. Plus it’s well maintained.” A few seconds later, we saw the sign that said “You are now leaving Region XI”. And the road changed from very nice to worst. John said “you jinxed it!” haha

At least an hour of our lives were spent on a 20km per hour ride. If you care for your vehicle, you do not have a choice. The road was torn to pieces. And there were many parts where it cracked and had big holes in it. I couldn’t believe the state of disrepair it’s in. We were told by the locals that repairs just started when President Aquino sat down. Hmmn.. that says a lot right? No wonder the roads were so terrible. I think one problem there was that it probably wasn’t done right? Hence, the cracks and the holes? For miles… Unbelievable…

Upon arrival at Duka Bay Resort, the staff immediately checked us in. I was given 30 meal tickets. Our booking came with buffet lunch , dinner and breakfast the next day for 10 people. 🙂 For what we paid, it was worth it.

After lunch, we set up tables and chairs under the tree. That’s our resting place beside the beach. 🙂 I can’t believe that I just sat down for hours, doing nothing… I watched the cloud formations changed, listened to the sound of the waves, watched my nephews play in the sand and relaxed to the max…

Around 4pm, we were told that the chef prepared binignit. A local delicacy for merienda. I said yes! We grew up with binignit on holy week. The staff brought them to our tables. John doesn’t like coconut and binignit, has one. So he ordered, ham and cheese sandwich.

Dinner Time:

You know, I was so amazed with the staff of Duka Bay. I asked them during lunch if they will have beef on their dinner menu. The restaurant incharge told me that if they don’t, they will just prepare beef for John. I found that so touching. I guess that’s what sets them apart from other resorts, they care for their guests.

Dinner included beef caldereta (which tasted so delicious), steamed fish, chicken with egg and cheese, vegetables, chicken sotanghon, soup and a lot of fresh fruits.

Northern Mindanao Road Trip 2013 – Day 1

I booked the tickets for  Cebu months ago. The plan was for us to spend the Holy Week there. But as the time drew near, I had this feeling of uneasiness about it. So Saturday, 23 March 2013, came and gone. But we stayed home instead of flying to Cebu.

It has proven us well several times that when I had these kind of feelings and followed my instinct, we were protected from possible harm.

So Holy Wednesday came, we still have not decided on what to do. Then John said, why don’t we do the loop? I agreed. Of course, lol. If you’ve been reading my blog, you’d  know by now  that I like to travel every chance I get. 🙂 So yeah, I said yes!

The loop for us means Butuan City – Cagayan De Oro City – Bukidnon provinces – then back to Davao. That’s a total of 800 kilometers,  (497 miles),  more or less. Tiring huh? Not really. 🙂 We’re stopping in several resorts after all, so we’re ok…

March 28 – Thursday:

We left around 8am. In the Nissan, were my sister Pearlie, my brother inlaw, 3 nephews, our cousin Samson, Kim (my youngest nephew’s yaya) and Dandan, (he’s been with the family for 8 years now. So he’s more like a brother than a driver. )

In the starex, were John and me. With mama and papa. 🙂 Yes, holy week is a family affair for us. Remember last year, we rented a beach resort exclusively for our family plus employees and their families? I wrote about it in April 2012. Just check my archive if you want to see Samal. 🙂

So let me share with you the photos I took.

When lunchtime came, we stopped in Bayugan and parked in a shaded area. Pearlie prepared beefsteak and fried chicken for lunch. We do roadtrips a lot so have evolved. LOL . We bring paper plates , plastic cups, etc. Yes, we’re very prepared. haha  John had beefsteak sandwich. While the rest of us ate with rice. 🙂

From Bayugan, we travelled more than an hour to Butuan. We arrived at the hotel around 2pm already. As usual, check in at Almont Inland Resort is never a problem. Plus the fact that they remembered us from previous stays, helped. They led us to our “home for the night”  immediately.

Yours truly. 🙂 Thanks John for this picture!

You know, I was so happy that we spent the night in Butuan City. We were able to invite to dinner our long time friend, Manong Danny and his wife, Annalyn.

Almont Inland Resort , (http://almont.com.ph/inland_resort/ )  offers an extensive buffet dinner.

For, P450 per head, I think it was cheap. Considering that I attacked their shrimps. ha ha ha..

We had fun reminiscing the good old days. A tear fell when I remembered some things in the past. I just thank God that all of those hardships were replaced with blessings, a million times over.

John and I went swimming after dinner. That was good for our backs. We both agreed before going to bed that we will build a swimming pool when we construct our rest house in Samal Island in the future. Soon, I hope… 🙂

So this is how the first day of our Holy Week 2013 Roadtrip went. 🙂

I’ll write about the next installment soon. Have you ever heard of Duka Bay? If you want to know more about it, please come back because that’s where we stayed on our second day.

Happy Easter everyone!

Claw Daddy

A few days ago, John and I had lunch at Claw Daddy located in SM Lanang Premier.

He ordered the beef and chicken ribs.

While I ordered this..

claw daddy

…. a king crab.

And yes, it tasted as good as it looks in the picture! 🙂

I believe that the crab was steamed. Then sauteed it with olive oil and a lot of fried garlic. The mixture of the crab meat , olive oil and the fried garlic was so delicious. It has given me a reason to come back!  Despite the price. ha ha

At P100.00 per gram, that gets expensive right? Specially if its size is really big. And specially if it’s just for one person. But I tell you, it is worth every centavo you spend.

John’s beef ribs was tender and mouth-watering. The chicken, was just so-so. Sorry claw daddy. hehe.. His order came with free 2 side dishes. He chose mashed potato and coleslaw. Ok, the mashed potato tasted really good. I’ll try doing that at home. 🙂  But the coleslaw, we both didn’t like it. We’re spoiled, you see. I make a really good coleslaw. So that paled compared to mine. And yes, I am bragging. LOL

Lunchtime on a weekday was not crowded. It was quiet the whole time we were there.

I like to eat in peace. That may sound weird but John and I hate listening to blaring sound when we’re eating in a restaurant. I mean think about it, what are we,  deaf?!  We’re not that old yet, we can still hear, you know. ha ha

Claw Daddy and New Orleans are connected to each other. In fact, they share one bathroom. I think it has the same owner. We went to New Orleans before, but we didn’t like the food and and it was so noisy, we never enjoyed our dinner there. That’s why I never bothered to write about it.   By the time we were done eating, we both had headache. So I vowed to never come back. And it came highly recommended by our friend. Sad..

Our waitress was very attentive. Even when the people started coming in and they got busy with their orders, she would refill our ice tea immediately.

That’s important to me. When a restaurant offers bottomless ice tea, and then they forget to refill your glass, isn’t that rude? lol I always thought that waiters are trained to notice this stuff? I don’t know, I may be wrong…

So our verdict? We would definitely come back. 🙂 But then again, I already said that. ha ha..

For those who love seafoods and ribs, try Claw Daddy. You won’t regret the experience!

We left Claw Daddy happy and… very full. 🙂

BPI Family Bank’s Brokers Circle

The soft spoken, Sir TJ, president of BPI Family Bank.

The soft spoken, Sir TJ, president of BPI Family Bank.

I was invited to BPI’s Brokers Circle Event held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.

It was a night of fun with good food  in the company of broker friends and the officers of our country’s leading bank, the Bank of Philippine Islands.  I was happy to be acknowledged as a runner up in one of their prestigious awards.

But more than that, I am glad that in 2012 I was able to help a lot of clients purchase their homes through bank financing.  You know, that feeling is indescribable. As a broker, I feel like I am a part of its history.  And that even if I am already gone, that legacy will never be forgotten. 🙂

To those who are reading this and have intentions of buying a property in the Philippines, BPI offers great service and low interest at this point in time. With a minimum of 6% per annum for a loan period of 1 year. And a maximum of 11.5% per annum for a 20 year loan period.

You know, that’s good news. Because the minimum rate before is 9% per annum. This means that the Philippine economy is doing great in general. The banks have a lot of money to lend. Hence, the lower rates.

Not just that, you can now avail also a maximum of 90% approval of your housing loan provided that:

1) the developer has a tie up with the bank

2) your income is more than sufficient to pay off the monthly amortization.

In Davao City, these are the properties you can use as collateral.

A) La Vista Montehttp://www.davaoproperties.com/house-for-sale/hfs-381

The Total Price is Php3,751,000.00 . Its downpayment then is only P375,100.00 (10%) , payable in 30 days to a maximum of 3 months. The 90% balance will then be financed by the Bank.   Monthly Amortizations are as follows:

5 years term – P72,144.00

10 years term –   46,503.00

15 years term      38,902.00

20 years term     36,002.00

B) Condominium:  (Palmetto Residences)

You can move in with 5-10% equity. Seriously. 🙂

A two bedroom unit costs a minimum of P3,100,000.00 more or less. So with P155,000.00 , you can move in to your new condo unit already. The monthly amortizations are the following:

5 years term            P62,935.00

10 years term              40,567.00

15 years term              33,937.00

20 years term             31,406.00

If you need assistance, email me through lea@davaoproperties.com and I’ll gladly assist you. Let’s discuss what you need and the required documents to ensure your approval.

To my existing clients, thank you for doing business with me. May God bless you in your new homes.

And to BPI, thank you for making it so easy for me to assist my clients. 🙂

Happy 76th Araw ng Dabaw! :)

March 16, 2013 – Davao City, Philippines

The day started being cloudy. I found that perfect for a parade. 🙂  But around 8am, the sun came out.  I tell you, it was hot!

But it’s ok, we were having fun. Besides, it was business and pleasure for me. Remember, we always join the 2 major parades in Davao, to give fliers of  the properties we are selling. 🙂

And of course, I took photos of the event. Let me share them with you.

The parade was joined by government and non-government offices. Also by universities and colleges.

Compared to last year, the police gave a better performance in keeping the people (both foreigners and locals) , out of the parade.  Everyone kept their distance.

Congratulations Davao City for another successful event! 🙂

Samal Island

Summer is just around the corner. And I notice that on Holy Week, a lot of people travel and try to relax.

If you still have not decided on where to go, then let me suggest. 🙂 Include Samal Island in your itinerary.

There are so many options in the island on where to stay. Resorts with white sand beach abound. The prices vary from 100 per night (Open Cottages) to high end accomodations in  Pearl Farm.  If you’re looking for something cheap but want to enjoy nature – perfect getaway would be Kaputian Beach Park. You can put up your tent there. Or rent an overnight cottage: non aircon for P500.00 and with aircon at P800.00 per night. Not bad right? You can rent a boat there for about 1000 pesos and the driver can either take you to Pearl Farm or Talicud Island. (the boat can accomodate 20 people at least.)  On your way to Pearl Farm, the driver will show you a vanishing island where you can walk on during lowtide. From there, you’ll see colorful fishes and starfish. Plus the corals are fantastic. The corals are better in Talicud. So if you like snorkelling, you will love it there. I promise you. 🙂

Other places to go include – Hagimit Falls, Maxima Aqua Fun, Monfort Bat Sanctuary.

Or just rent a motorbike and enjoy the island. 🙂

For photos and details of the resorts I mentioned above, try searching my blog. I wrote about them previously.

I just love the place. 🙂 I dream of one day putting up a rest house there with a porch overlooking the sea. Nice right? I dream too of having our own aviary and butterfly sanctuary. While John wants turkeys. haha.. Yeah, I know we’re weird. lol

Let me show you some photos which I took a few days ago. We were visiting our workers and inspecting the works they’ve done. And at the same time, we were chilling out as we enjoyed the fresh air and the view of Davao Gulf.

John said, life is hard, lol Some people likes to be on the beach. While he wants to be on top, overlooking the beach.

Where we are sitting, will soon rise a nipa hut for guests. I am so excited. 🙂

I am chillin... Too. :)

I am chillin… Too. 🙂

When I am in the island, I feel so relaxed. Yes, in this case, we were working. Had to talk to our staff, etc.  But even so, it doesn’t feel like work. It feels like we’re just there to enjoy the day. Like we’re on vacation. 🙂 Yeah, that kind of feeling…

Ahh.. time flew by… It’s time go home.

Taken at the barge, on our way home. Sunset in Samal Island.

Taken at the barge, on our way back to Davao. Sunset in Samal Island.

We had to wait for about 30 mins. It took time for the newest and biggest ferry to get full. On a weekday, that takes time. But I didn’t mind, the sunset’s reflections changed from pink to bright orange before it finally went down…

I Had An Accident!

Just a minor one. 🙂 Thank God.

But it was enough to damage the windshield and the driver’s door. 😦

The driver  who hit us was asleep. Can you believe that! He came from the opposite side of the road and crossed our lane. He hit first a Honda car.

When my driver saw that, he swerved to the right hoping that we won’t get hit. But well, like I said, he smashed the driver side of our van.

When I saw all those, I froze and I remembered shouting at the top of my voice. lol.. It was a very long “aaayyyyyyyyyy”…  The impact was loud and sudden that I hit my right arm with the seat handle. 😦

Everything was like a blur afterwards. I think I was floating somewhere else for awhile until the police was done with the sketch and the report.

In the afternoon, I went to visit my chiropractor because I was hurting all over. That and a good night’s sleep helped.

I feel somewhat better now, as I write this.

Thinking about it, I realized that life is fleeting. It could have been worse. If my driver did not swerve to the right, the small truck would have hit us head on.

From what I understand, the driver didn’t have much sleep the previous night. He smelled of alcohol too. Unbelievable. One irresponsible driver hit two vehicles. And wounded the Honda’s lady owner. 😦  Her name is Susan and I hope that she is well..

The side mirror flew. It went to the back of our Nissan van. I don't know how that happened.

The side mirror flew. It went to the back of our Nissan van. I don’t know how that happened.

Thank you Police Officer Petelona for your assistance. 🙂

I am glad for comprehensive insurance! Do you know that it is expensive to replace a windshield here? Not to mention the cost of the door’s replacement.  Sigh…

The driver who hit us, left.  Not nice huh?! So Officer Petelona, took his truck’s  plate. According to the truck owner, the driver who happens to be his cousin borrowed the vehicle. So yeah, never allow your irresponsible cousin or relative borrow your vehicle. 🙂

I’m just so frustrated and aggravated because I am suffering because of him. My back and neck hurts!

So drivers from all over the world. If you think you are not capable of driving because you are sick, you haven’t had sleep or you are drunk, PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE!!!!

It is unfair for your victims …. Seriously, think about it. Why should we suffer for your carelessness. 😦 Just because you don’t value your life, does not necessarily mean that we don’t.

Honestly, I don’t appreciate it.

Chicco Di Caffe

My client was late.   It’s not a problem. I’m used to it. That’s Filipino time, you know.

And yes, I agree with you, being late in appointments is rude. 🙂 But well, it’s part of my job. Dealing with late comers, that is.  Sometimes, it is frustrating specially if it will make me late for my next appointment. But it is a reality here in our country and getting stressed over it is useless.

Besides, some people have told me, “you shouldn’t have come early”. haha.. So yeah, sometimes it is my fault for coming early. LOL

So I wait in style. If they cannot go to my office, I meet the clients in malls or at the lobby of the hotels they are staying at. That way, if people are late, there is a coffee shop or a restaurant nearby.  I eat when I can , if I can. Because with my work, I don’t know when will I have the time to eat again.

Today, I’m at Nccc Mall in Maa. Sitting at Chicco Di Caffe.

I like their capuccino here. 🙂 I am not much of a coffee person but in times like these, coffee helps.

I was glad to find out that they offer meals too. Not just cupcakes and muffins…

Looks delicious right? :)
