Of Rain and Birds…

davao city philippines, birds, rainy days

We’ve been having some unusual weather the past days. It’s been announced that we have a low pressure for more than a week now. Hence, the daily rain. Makes it difficult when you need to show properties. Sometimes, it comes with strong winds.

What’s sad is that Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley is now deep in water. 😦 Something’s terribly wrong with the weather. January is supposed to be a normal month. You know, not so hot. And not so cold. Oh well…

So today has been another wet day. But I am tired of hiding from the rain. So I went out and took several photos of the birds playing outside our house. I live in a gated and guarded neighborhood. But the land fronting our house is still vacant. So it gives me the chance to watch the birds play. 🙂

I think they too are tired of the rain…..  They looked sad. But still so beautiful. 🙂

Made me realize once again, that regardless of whatever situation we are in, what matters most is our own perspective. And how we handle it.

Today, I could have hidden from the rain. And missed this…. And that would have been too bad!

So go out and play. 🙂 It’s a beautiful sunday even if it rains!

New Year Get Away – Secdea Beach Resort

The image of blue skies with its beautiful cloud formations, reflected on the crystal clear waters of Samal Island was playing in my mind. That’s when I knew that the sea was calling me… It felt like a magnet pulling me towards it. Weird I thought because I am always there. In the island, that is. But then again, it’s mostly about work. So I guess, it doesn’t count.

So on the 1st day of the year, my family and I headed to the waters of Secdea Beach Resort in Brgy. San Isidro, Babak, Island Garden City of Samal.

I’ve been there once with John on a day tour. This time though I wanted to enjoy it a little longer. So we opted to stay overnight. My sister did the booking – 1 Seaside cottage for me and John. And a 2 bedroom , 2 bathroom bungalow house with wide verandah for her family and our parents.

The Seaside Cottage.

The Seaside Cottage.

The Sea Breeze Cottage.

Check in was fast. Thanks to Sheila for being nice. 🙂

John rented a golf cart for me to practice driving. Yep, I do not know how to drive. And I would not try. I told you it’s scary to drive here. That’s why I so admire all of you my friends, who do. You’re awesome! And brave… 🙂 And yes, I am lame. ha ha

The seaside cottage is large. Its bathroom has separate shower and toilet. I just wish that they would install a heater. The glass sliding door in the room opened to the terrace, which overlooks the mangrove walk. I could hear the water splashing under it. Beautiful view. And so relaxing…

Ahh I am home….

I loved the mountains and the cold weather while we were in the US. But I love the sea as well, despite the scorching heat of the sun. I feel blessed that I get to experience both worlds.

I love their floating cabana. It’s  in the middle of the sea with a panoramic view of the mountains. You have to check my sunrise pictures later in this post to understand where I’m coming from.

Night time came so dark and quiet. The glow of the Christmas lights seemed like fireflies from a distance. After having a “nightcap” of ice cream with the family, John and I took a walk. Before I forget, I would like to say thank you to Tommy for going out of his way to look for medicines – my brother in law had fever. So do 3 of our employees. And John developed stomach sickness. I told Tommy that should he ever need a job, I will give him one. Employees like him are a keeper. 🙂 I really appreciate it. Thank you.

January 2, 2014:

I woke up about 5 in the morning and walked towards the beach. I can only hear the birds and the sea splashing beneath the mangrove trees. I looked for a comfortable location as I wait for the sunrise. The peace and quiet gave me time to pray and say my thanksgiving. I am grateful that my first 2 days of the year were spent on the beach. How awesome is that?! 🙂

And then a kaleidoscope of colors started playing in the skies…. My first sunrise photos of the year!

Beautiful sunrise! :)

And then everyone woke up.  The day has officially started… 🙂

Mama , papa and the rest came to enjoy the beach as early as 6 in the morning. I told them that the water is cold. But that’s how they like it! Then came my nephews. Who frolicked for a little while in the beach before proceeding to Secdea’s infinity pool…

Before 9am , we all headed toward the  restaurant for breakfast. The buffet consisted of scrambled eggs, beefsteak, garlic rice, fruits (watermelon, banana, pineapple) and all you can drink coffee. John ordered pancakes. He said that he would have liked it better if they hadn’t ran out of syrup. lol

Ok so I don’t know how to jet ski. 🙂 But I liked kayaking. So that’s the first order of business after breakfast. ha ha

But somehow we hit the floating cottage. So Cholo, being a good swimmer, dove into the water and pushed the kayak. ha ha ha… I am just so amazed because Cholo is a special child. And yet, he’s better in swimming. And in kayaking. In diving. And in driving the golf cart. I told John, between cholo and me, I think I’m the special one. ha ha ha…. Seriously, right?! lol

Other than kayaking, the nephews enjoyed fish feeding so much. Secdea has a fishing lagoon but they are still letting the fishes grow larger. Hence, the fish feeding program.

The Mangrove Walk:

I spent a long time in this area. I loved the fact that they put some concrete benches where people can meditate, relax and just enjoy nature at its best….

I have no idea what are the names of those fishes and crablets but I love their colors. They looked cute right? 🙂

While I was enjoying my moment with these crustaceans, the owner of the resort walked by. So we ended up chatting for a bit. What she said got stuck in my mind. Secdea indeed has a quiet space for everyone…

I am glad that I was able to enjoy the new year there with my family. Thank you Lord for such blessing. 🙂

I may be a little late my friends, but I still would like to say “HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU” …. 🙂 May this year bring more happiness, good health and success to all of us!

The Year That Was…

Taken at Bear Lake, Rocky Mountains, Colorado.

Taken at Bear Lake, Rocky Mountains, Colorado.

I just came from our high school reunion.  I was asked to give a Testimonial, in honor of our teachers. And somehow it put me on a thinking mode.

High school for me was fun. Despite all the hardships I went through. Looking back, I realized that there is a reason for everything and why things happen the way they do. Those experiences  made me stronger and a better person. I was a consistent honor student. Which paved the way for scholarships that paid for high school and college.   When you come from a poor family, that matters. A lot. I thank God for such blessings.

Dreams, indeed do come true. But its realization does not happen overnight. I love reading books. And in one of the books I read, the dream of seeing the Rocky Mountains was born. In my mind, I had an idea of what to expect. But when it finally happened in 2013, it blew my mind. What I thought I would see was nothing compared to what was infront of me. Those snow capped mountains coupled with the fresh pine tree scent, the cool breeze of the air blowing in my face, the snowflakes falling on me… the call of the wind… made me shed a tear.

There is a God who loves me ,  granted my heart’s desire. And more.

Not many Filipinos, specially one that came from the province, has experienced what I had. It’s been at least a month since I got back from America, but I am still overwhelmed with the red mountains in Arizona. With the exquisite and majestic beauty of the Grand Tetons. With the rutting elks, moose and antelopes, sweetly calling for their mates. The song of these animals sent shivers down my spine. The word amazing is an understatement. And then there was the crystal clear waters at the bottom of the King’s Canyon. The giant Sequioa trees that left me speechless. The fun in watching the squirrels jump from tree to tree. I am smiling as I write this now. That’s how vivid the memories I have of our road trip still.

Ahh… 2013, the year that was… My country has suffered a lot of trials this year. Specially when typhoon Haiyan hit the Visayas region. But the Filipinos’ resilience will always help us to stand up once again. With a smile on our faces.

As 2014 approaches, I would like to pray for all of us. That all our dreams will come true. That we will forgive those who hurt us. That we will let go of the baggages that hinder our growth. That we will learn to be more loving, more patient,  more understanding and more tolerant. That we will do our best to live our lives to the fullest. That we will go for what we want. That we will try to help others more. That we will strive to be the best that we can be. In anything. And in everything that we do.

My family and friends, as we leave 2013 behind, let us celebrate.  We all survived! Thank God. 🙂

To 2014 and the blessings it brings, CHEERS!

Advance happy new year everyone! 🙂

US Roadtrip – Sedona, AZ

“We’re looking for Sedona Park” , John replied when he was asked how the tourism officer can help us.

The man’s reply was “which one”?  When John and I looked at each other, he smiled and explained to us that there are several sights/parks scattered all over Sedona. That’s why the whole place has been declared as a state park. Then he got this big map and gave suggestions on where we might want to go.

After expressing our gratitude for his help, we started our own tour of Sedona. 🙂 This is what I liked about having rented our own car for this road trip. We can go everywhere we want at our own pace. We don’t like joining the tours because we both hate being rushed. I mean seriously, you can’t enjoy the place that way right?

The whole place is amazing. I told you previously that I love the mountain rocks in Arizona. The colors varied from pink , red and orange. Sedona has this different charm. The colorful mountains looming above us looked so beautiful against the blue sky.

No matter how science would explain their existence and how they came to be, to me – I would always think that there is a God who painstakingly and/ or playfully molded them together and displayed his masterpiece in Sedona.

With mouth agape, I heard all the other tourists exclaimed in wonder, how beautiful the place is.

I was doubly amazed because I had no idea what to expect. You know, since our supposed schedule got “shutdown” together with the US government and as they closed the national parks, John and I just followed US 89 route and enjoyed what came along the way.

Believe me, I was ecstatic that destiny brought us there. 🙂

BEFORE SEDONA:

The hairpin turns between Prescott and Jerome is scary but  the panoramic view is fantastic!

Arizona

John and I had a weird moment at Jerome. I asked him if he smelled burning candles. But he said no. And then I read later on that this is a haunted place because a lot of miners died there.

Jerome, Arizona

The goodness of people. During this trip, I am so amazed at how nice most people are. It is difficult for me and John to have our picture taken together. So I really appreciate it when people offer to take picture of us. I took photos of other couples as well. But most of those who offered didn’t want something in return. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

This picture was taken before reaching Jerome, Arizona.

SEDONA / RED ROCK CANYON

Pink Bridge. When you use red rocks and cement, it comes out pink. Cool right? Most buildings there have red bricks or orange rocks in them. It’s so beautiful! 🙂

IMG_1457 Sedona , Arizona IMG_1462 IMG_1460 IMG_1459

And oh… I forgot to mention the yellow rocks as well. We have limestone in the Philippines. So that’s kinda normal to me. But what astonished me was the combination of yellow and red mountains. If I hadn’t seen it in person, I would think that you’re just pulling my leg. ha ha

The photo below is called …… the bell rock of course! You can see why, right? 🙂

Sedona Arizona IMG_1511 IMG_1505 IMG_1498 IMG_1476 IMG_1470 IMG_1469 IMG_1468 IMG_1466

Some mountain formations reminded me of the temples in Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia. The difference is that Angkor Wat was built by men in the 1800’s. While Sedona hills/rock formations are natural.

Chapel of the Holy Cross:

We saw this building on top of the mountain. From afar, we had no idea what it was. But as we got nearer, we realized it is a small chapel.

Sedona , Arizona

Despite the fact that tourists flocked in Sedona, the chapel felt so peaceful. Do you believe in destiny? The moment I got inside, I felt like I was meant to be there. Weird right? But there it is…

Not one, but I’ve seen several tour buses in Sedona. Have you heard of the Pink Jeep? It’s famous there. 🙂 They use these pink jeeps during the tours. Fits perfectly with the environment. You know, pink roads/bridges … pink jeeps. lol

Rocky Mountain Elk

I took this photo sometime in October at the Rocky Mountains National Park.

While we were there, I read these awesome words…

ADVISE FROM AN ELK

“Don’t get stuck in a rut.   Cherish wide open spaces.

Live large. Be at home in the woods.

Make your voice heard. Know when to make tracks.

BE MAGNIFICENT!!!! “

Such nice words to live by. Have a happy sunday everyone! 🙂

US Roadtrip – Prescott, Arizona

The State of Arizona is one of the most beautiful places  I’ve been to in my lifetime. Its landscape is out of this world… In some areas, I felt like we were on another planet. Seriously!

You know, those sci-fi movies, must have been shot there. ha ha

This is where I got introduced to US 89 Route as well. We left Interstate 40 and entered into US 89 in Ashfork, AZ.

The first thing I noticed were the pine trees. I wondered how can they thrive in the dessert? I always thought they only live in  cold places. I’m sure this place is super hot in summer right?

And then the rock formations. The ones in Prescott, the 1st part of US 89 route is nothing compared to the rest of Arizona. You just have to come back and check the rest of the photos in my next blogs. 🙂

So let me take you down  memory lane….

IMG_1244

Arizona Arizona

John with the Colorado River on the back ground.

IMG_1257 Arizona

I am still amazed when I think of the rock formation in Arizona.

Arizona

The US Shutdown happened during our vacation. 😦 We were supposed to stay at the Grand Canyon but had to cancel our booking because the park was closed. Sad right? We planned this roadtrip for almost a year. And that plan went down the drain because like children, the politicians in the white house could not put their act together. Ridiculous and stupid! I guess politics are the same wherever we go huh?!

Grand Canyon was closed because of the US shutdown.

Grand Canyon was closed because of the US shutdown.

You know, other than the panoramic view , what I love most about this trip was the roads. Wherever we went, even at 14,000 feet above sea level, the roads are well maintained!
And I just have to say this, I commend the americans for being  respectful and considerate drivers. I know, there are some who aren’t. But I can safely say that at least 90% of them are really nice. It isn’t scary to drive there at all. I finally understood what  John told me a million times everytime we travel in the Philippines.  Driving in most places in the US is relaxing. And I agree with him, 100%.

IMG_1286 Arizona

See the rocks above? They look pretty right? I wonder how they came to be?  lol . John was laughing at me because he could not believe that I love rocks that much. ha ha

The building below is in Prescott, Arizona. I like the brick design. 🙂

Prescott, Arizona

We have arrived.

This is where we will be staying for a few days. While waiting for the shutdown to be over. Little did I know that it was  wishful thinking. The shutdown ended when we were in Colorado Springs already. Ahh.. but that’s another story in the near future. 🙂

Arizona

In the meantime, let me go back to Prescott. 🙂

Our host , happens to be a client way back in the Philippines. Skip became our friend over time though. When he found out that we were doing a roadtrip, he insisted that we stay in his house.

Honestly, I loved our stay in Prescott. Skip’s house was surrounded by hills. I found myself sitting in his verandah every morning ,  listening to humming birds. They’re so cute! Have you ever seen a humming bird?

They float on air and were continuously buzzing!  ha ha It was my first time to see them. So it was really fun watching them. 🙂

Prescott, Arizona

I saw a blue jay too. And a wood pecker. And rabbits! 🙂 This maybe boring to you my friends, but I consider those awesome. ha ha …

After 3 days, it was time for us to leave. Of course, the parks were still close. But around this time, I have somehow accepted already that the rest of our roadtrip, like the government , has shutdown.

That didn’t stop us though from having a good time. We had some picture taking before we left. Skip prepared a really nice breakfast. He’s so nice he gave me a “baon” too. A pack of blue berry cheesecake and rolls. Sweet right?! He bought so many groceries for our visit. Made us feel like we were supposed to stay for weeks. ha ha

I love his kitchen!

To Skip, thank you for being a good friend and a wonderful host. I hope we can return the favor someday. I don’t know how since you’re not coming back to the Philippines. But hopefully, we will be able to.

Despite the government shutdown, our roadtrip is far from over! 🙂 Believe me…

US Roadtrip – Hoover Dam

Five days in Vegas wasn’t enough. But it was time for us to move on to our next destination. So we promised ourselves that we will be back. 🙂

After a sumptuous breakfast at the hotel, we got ready for our departure. Check out at MGM was done online. So there was no hassle at all. We took US 515 which connected to US 93 and eventually I-40, on our way to Arizona.

Going to Hoover Dam wasn’t a part of our itinerary. But John and I were glad that we passed through the area because it’s an engineering marvel. Imagine how difficult it must have been years ago when the workers started its construction? Such massive development in the middle of nowhere must have been challenging.

Lake Mead, on the other hand, is a product of Hoover Dam. From afar, it looked so beautiful and inviting.

Wikipedia states that it is the largest reservoir in the United States in maximum water capacity. It is located on the Colorado River about 24 mi (39 km) from the Strip southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona. Formed by the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is 112 miles (180 km) long when the lake is full, has 550 miles (890 km) of shoreline, is over 500 feet (152 meters) at greatest depth, with a surface elevation of 1,221.4 feet (327.3 metres) above sea level, and has 247 square miles (640 km2) of surface, and when filled to capacity, 28 million acre-feet (35 km3) of water. However, the lake has not reached this capacity since 1983 due to increasing droughts.

So let me share with you my photos of both places:

Hoover Dam IMG_1161 IMG_1169 IMG_1189 IMG_1193 IMG_1196 IMG_1198 IMG_1207 IMG_1214 IMG_1215 IMG_1216 IMG_1218 IMG_1220 IMG_1224 IMG_8161 Hoover Dam

So if you’re in Nevada, try stopping by at the Hoover Dam. And Lake Mead Recreation Area.

It’s worth the trip! 🙂

Their official website – http://www.nps.gov/lake/index.htm  tells you what activities are available at Lake Mead.

Enjoy!

US Roadtrip – Las Vegas

We arrived Las Vegas around 6 in the evening. It was our first time there so we were kinda at a loss. It’s a good thing that we bought a road atlas map back in California. Found it at Glendale Arcade, actually. 🙂 The car we rented supposedly has a GPS but well, I am kuripot. Stingy to my foreign friends. I didn’t want to pay $9 per day for 60 days.

Check in at the MGM was a breeze.  I couldn’t believe it considering the long line. The hotel was so big it took us time to reach our room. I booked for a king room with a view of the strip. Believe me, it was amazing. The view was superb as the lights from below shimmered.

Las Vegas (2) Las Vegas (1)

After a short Skype call with my family back home, John and I proceeded to the buffet restaurant for dinner. Ok, this was a long walk. A very long walk. ha ha… We had to pass through the wide casino and shops before we reached there. I did not expect that.

To my Davaoeno friends, imagine Marco Polo. Multiplied by at least 10 times its size. That’s how big MGM is. I suggest that when you visit Las Vegas, bring a very comfortable flat shoes for walking. he he…

The food was great and plenty. I had a hard time deciding what to eat because everything looked good. Seriously… lol And the Mexican rice was a life saver! The best Mexican rice I’ve eaten all over the US.

Las Vegas (30)

The next day, we left the hotel after breakfast. According to my research, MGM is so big that it merited its own monorail station. And like I said, the place is indeed huge. Having a station just behind the hotel is so convenient. We just paid a 3 day pass and we were able to ride in it several times a day.

So Let me share with you some of the photos I took:

We had dinner at the Spice Market Buffet inside Planet Hollywood on our last night in Vegas. The place was packed with tourists. I understood why after dinner. The food was great! Las Vegas (31)

I made sure I had a picture here because this is where Manny Pacquiao fought. haha.. Don’t judge. I am proud that he’s a Filipino like me. 🙂

Las Vegas (32)

Las Vegas is dubbed as the Sin City. But you can enjoy a visit there without gambling, drinking or doing some crazy stuff. 🙂 I guess we’re just a boring couple because we were contented with sight seeing and watching shows. I tell you though, we had fun despite the fact that our feet were hurting after days of walking.

US Roadtrip – Enroute To Las Vegas

From Sequioa and King’s Canyon, we took Highway 198 and 65 to Bakersfield. From there, we proceeded to Barstow through US 58. And on to US 15 for Las Vegas, Nevada.

This was a long trip, about 6 hours or so. But the route we took was a scenic one. So we didn’t mind. 🙂

It was here that I saw a lot of orchard farms. Apples, orange and nuts.

This is where I saw also for the first time the oil pumps. I found that interesting because we have none in the Philippines. We have natural resources but it isn’t being developed. It made me wish that you know, our government would do something about it. And then maybe, we will no longer pay $5.50 per gallon of fuel. Ahhh.. talk about wishful thinking!

Las Vegas

Another thing that I found interesting were the cargo trains beside the highway. You know, it may be old fashioned but it keeps the traffic from the main road. So I find that plan really intelligent, whoever thought of it. The difference in my country is that we have cargo trucks who are always on the left lane even if they are supposed to be on the right lane. Slower vehicles, on the right lane remember? But nahh… these drivers are the kings of the road so they do not care if they are keeping the traffic. 🙂 Same thing with bus drivers. So we have these small roads with too many vehicles = traffic jam all the time. If you’ve been here, you would agree with me. It is not relaxing to drive here. If you need excitement in your life, I dare you to live in the Philippines. You will have fun. he he …

trains in california

You may find this funny, but believe me I looked forward to the exit signs. Seriously. ha ha.. It tells us where to eat, that’s why! And no, no Mcdonald’s please.  We sort of banned eating in  mcdonald’s while we were there since that’s what we have in the Philippines.

us roadtrip

Somewhere in Barstow, I saw acres and acres of windmills.

Isn't that view beautiful? :)

Isn’t that view beautiful? 🙂

Ahhh.. and then of course , the Mojave Desert. I have never seen that much space in all my life. I would hate to get lost out there!

us roadtrip

I don’t know what airfield is this. But I saw a lot of planes. 🙂

us roadtrip

Ok, we almost had an accident in this area. This truck was tailing us. Too close for comfort, actually. So John let him pass. And then he swerved intentionally, almost hitting us. I don’t cuss, but you know exactly what I thought. So we called up 911 to report him.  Obviously, assholes are everywhere. To borrow John Lennon’s words “people are the same wherever you go..”
