US 2015 – Seattle Day 1

The trip to Seattle  from Manila was about 16 hours , including a stop over at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan. It was my first time with ANA Airlines. I loved the plane and the service. The food, not so much. 🙂  The TV was smaller than Delta and Japan Airlines too. But they had good selection of new movies. I don’t sleep much on the plane so I look forward to watching movies. Plus, I have to mention this, Ana Airline’s pilot is good. The take off and landing was very smooth. Thank you.

We arrived in Seattle at 10am. The line at the immigration was long but when my time came, the interview was short. 🙂 I was asked the normal questions like how long will we be in the U.S. , where we are going, etc. And no, after several trips to America, I wasn’t asked anymore how I can afford to stay there. ha ha

From there, we picked up our luggage and proceeded to the bus station that would take us to the rental car offices. That sounded so easy right? But in a big airport such as Seattle’s, believe me, that’s difficult. You have to figure out where to go and how to go there. But don’t worry, there are signs everywhere. You just need to take a deep breath and read. 🙂 Remember you’re in America already, where the systems work , making the stress level of traveling from 10 to 1. ha ha

Ahh finally, we were delivered at National Rent A Car. I just have to mention this, I love National. Their employees are very professional. And their vehicles are newer and well maintained. That’s why, when I booked our rental car through traveljigsaw.com , I specifically told them to please prioritize National. Gee, we had a terrible experience with Dollar Rent A Car last year, so I wanted to make sure that we do not book with them again. Ever.

Incase you’re wondering why I book through http://www.traveljigsaw.com – sometimes they have promos. And when that happens, booking through them is a lot cheaper than booking through the dealer. Plus when we have problems with our booking, traveljigsaw is just one email away. And if it’s an emergency, like with our sad Dollar experience last year. They called us up. That matters a lot when you’re traveling.

So moving on, my booking said Jeep Grand Cherokee or similar. The “similar” refers to a Hyundai Sta. Fe.  It does not compare. At all. So we chose the Jeep. Sometimes though, it’s not really your decision to make. We just got lucky,  there was one in the parking space when we arrived. 🙂

20150903_121625

With the help of the Jeep’s GPS, the trip to the hotel didn’t take long. I booked our room months ahead of time. So we do not have to worry where to go upon arrival in the US. I chose Homewood Suites by Hilton because of its location. It’s in Pike St. And when you’re in Seattle for a vacation, that’s the place to be. The price was just right considering the room’s huge space and the free breakfast and dinner. I know, I got a good deal when I booked it! If you’re thinking of visiting Seattle , you might want to check their website –

http://www.homewoodsuitesseattle.com/

Oh did I mention that their staff are awesome? 🙂

They have valet parking. So John just gave them key to our vehicle and they took care of it. Check-in wasn’t difficult either. I just gave them my passport and we’re done. We were given the keys and off we went to our room.

20150903_170641

So this is gonna be our home for the next 5 days. We just waited for our luggage. And when those were delivered, we went to sleep.  🙂 Yep, grandma and grandpa need to rest. ha ha ha

Yes, this is why I am really hoping that someday, there’s a direct flight from Davao City to the U.S. It’s tiring, specially when you have a one night stop in Manila.

We woke up about 4:30 p.m. The 4 hour sleep did us a world of good! Glad to have a refreshed feeling after such a rigorous trip.

20150903_165756

I mentioned earlier that our booking came with free breakfast and dinner right? By the time we went down, their pizza night has already started. So we ate first before going out for a walk. I found that so convenient. With dinner taken cared of, we can concentrate on checking out downtown Seattle. 🙂

First thing first though, look for an AT & T store and buy a US sim card. Why? Because roaming is expensive. Never, ever make a call or receive a call using your roaming line from the Philippines. I made that mistake years ago and I paid “dearly” for it. The US sim card has data. That being said, it’s free to call anyone in my country using skype , magic jack or facebook. For $60 dollars per month, I find that cheap.

AT & T is located at the corner of Pike St. and Broadway. It was about 10minutes walk from the hotel.

We bought a 2 month package for both the hubby and I. We wanted to be sure that we can call or text our family and friends while we are in the US. And I can call / fb my family and our  staff back home. The technology these days are amazing. 🙂 Makes doing business worldwide so easy. Plus the mobile google map is a big help when we are on the road. We’ve had experiences before where the car gps seems to be lost. lol So it’s handy when you have data and you can check google map for confirmation. 🙂

Google Map

From AT & T, we continued walking till we reached the end of the street, where Starbucks and the Farmer’s Market is located. 🙂

So here are some photos I took during our walk:

This Visitor Center is just a few meters away from our hotel along Pike St.  It’s such a big help when you want information about the place. The maps and brochures are free. Since I collect those things , I’m so happy we found this visitor center. 🙂 Thank you!

20150903_180746 20150903_180802

At the Convention Center.

20150903_201654

Along Pike Street. Love their Cheesecake! 🙂

20150903_180952

The Farmer’s Market at 7:00pm.  It’s like 5:30pm in the Philippines. 🙂

20150903_193121

Bought this in Starbucks. Not for me. But for a friend who collects starbucks cups. 🙂

20150903_193818

John gets tired of telling me to buy souvenir shirts wherever we go. But I feel like I do not need those. I like to collect maps, brochures and pictures of our travels. Plus in my line of business I seldom wear T-shirts. So they will just take more space in our closet. 🙂 That said space is reserved for the outlet malls stuff . Those I can wear for work. haha… Nice excuse to shop right? lol

So here’s my date. And according to him, my driver and luggage carrier. lol I can’t drive, you see. But I carry my luggage. Sounds so defensive huh? hahaha

Thank you John! Love you.

That’s the Seattle Great Wheel, behind him. 🙂

Narra Park Residences

How do you ensure that Deed of Restrictions are strictly implemented in this project?” I found myself asking the officer explaining ALSONS DEV. CORPORATION’s first mid-cost subdivision – Narra Park Residences.

The answer was – “Our track record , through our high end subdivisions like Las Terrazas, Woodridge Park, Ladislawa Garden Village, etc. shows that ALDEVINCO takes care of the project and their buyers even if the subdivision has already been turned over to the homeowners. If all of you (the group listening to the presentation) are familiar with these subdivisions, you will know that the value of the properties there have gone up so high because we have built not just mere subdivisions but high end communities. Narra Park Residences, may be a mid-cost subdivision , but this is the best class among its peers”.

I asked such question, not only for myself , but for all the clients out there who are thinking of investing their hard earned monies in real estate. Imagine, investing Php2 to 3 million pesos in a property advertised as a gated and guarded community with  Deed of Restrictions. Only to realize later on that :

1) The Homeowners Association is a mess.

2) That said Deed of Restrictions are nothing but mere words floating on air.

Sad right?

In the meantime, you are stuck in a neighborhood , that you realize you do not like after all. And that there is nothing you can do about it. Unless you want to go to court and sue everyone concerned. Or sell your house. 🙂

These are realities that not many people will  disclose nor discuss with the buyers. But as a buyer myself, I am sharing my thoughts so you are aware and you’re able to equip yourselves better when you buy properties in the Philippines.

The bottom line is – choose your developer well. Check their track record. Ask the neighborhood how they find living there. And ask how is their homeowner’s association. Remember , these are the people you will be dealing with for as long as you decide to live there.

Would I recommend Alsons Development Corporation? Of course, their track record in Davao City is impeccable. The prices of their properties double or triple at least within a 5 year period. Why? Because they just don’t sell land or houses. They sell the whole package. They ensure that the community you are living in will always be that – a nice neighborhood one would want to live with forever.

Today, the 18th of November 2015, Nurtura Land & Home (Alson’s Subsidiary incharge of their Mid-cost Housing) , will start selling Narra Park Residences.

So I am sharing these facts to help you decide in your search of a home. I have never and will never “hard sell”. I can only recommend. And help you decide. I hope this helps.

The Marriott Cafe

We only get to visit this place once a year because we live in Davao. And Manila , is 1 hour and 45 minutes away by plane.

So when we go to the U.S. , we make it a point to visit The Marriott Café, during our stop over in the country’s capital.

Why? Because their sumptuous buffet is a must! That is why… 🙂

20150902_174207

That night, I had seafood galore. I’m not much of a clam eater. So I just concentrated on their prawns and lobsters. The chef will cook them any way you want to. But I had mine just grilled. Ahhh.. perfect with a little vinegar… They have other sauce. I just love vinegar on mine.

So now, i’m hungry again… 🙂

Look at those, don’t they look delicious? Oh those are just the first batch. I’m sure I ate more than we paid. ha ha

20150902_190108

The chef in the middle told me to try their grilled fish. So I did. He topped it with mango sauce. And that was yummy. I went to their counter ,  told them what I thought and said, thank you.

They were happy chefs. 🙂 You can see from the picture right? ha ha

It is so nice when they go out of their way to assist a client. Thank you.

I will have to remember that, when a chef recommends to try a dish, I should try it. Because it normally,  is good.

20150902_185440

The buffet includes – a noodle bar, a salad bar, a Japanese bar, pizza bar, ice cream counter (I’m not kidding!) , dessert bar (fruit and a lot of sweets).

20150902_174306

20150902_174212

Oh and you start with this bar.

20150902_174436

Hors d’ oeuvre consist of cheese, bread, peanuts, pecans and ham, among other things.

So is it worth the cost? I’d say, yes. Its scrumptious dinner selection is something that I would go back for, if at all possible.

To learn more about The Marriott Café, please check their website here –

http://www.rwmanila.com/restaurants/marriott-cafe

Before going back to the room, we stayed a few minutes at the lounge for a night cap and listen to her sing.

20150902_202941

So if you’re going on an international trip and you have a one night stop over , staying in Resorts World Manila is perfect. The location is very near Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

There are several things to do at RW – shop at their high end Maxims Mall, go to a casino, visit other restaurants, etc.

In other words, you won’t get bored. 🙂

For old people like us, we just chose to eat and sleep. After all, the adventure starts when we arrive in America….

The Journey

I just turned 44. 🙂 Happy birthday to me!

I honor God for all the blessings that he has bestowed upon me and my family in the past year. It has been a great one. Thank you Lord.

And a big “thank you” to my husband for taking me to the ride of my  life as an early birthday gift.  🙂 I shall be forever grateful to him for the wonderful memories….

I am still in America as I write this. But let me share with you the journey that has me  awed and amazed until now.  I am not just lucky. I am so blessed.

Our 2015 road trip, started in Seattle. (I’ll be writing a separate blog for all of the places I’ve been to soon.  )

For now, let me share with you the photos I have compiled in the past month or so. 🙂

Found snow on top of Mt. Rainier National Park. It felt like Christmas with all the evergreens around me. haha…. Beautiful right? 🙂

IMG_7850

IMG_8031

From there, the road trip continues to Vancouver, Canada. Stayed at the English Bay for a few days. Toured the city. And enjoyed our walks at  Stanley, Park. 🙂

IMG_8118

IMG_8144

IMG_8149

We traveled about 6  hours from Vancouver to Clearwater, British Columbia. I wrote about it here. (Type for Wells Gray Park in the search box of this blog. )

IMG_8324

IMG_8345

Wells Gray Park is a beautiful place. I had the chance for the first time to stay in a cabin beside the lake. Ohhh… that was an incredible experience. I loved waking up to the sound of the birds chirping. The cold weather also brought fog to the lake which made it look mysterious and mystifying.

20150910_082829

Later in the day, the same lake looked so different… 🙂

20150910_170616

From British Columbia, our next stop is Jasper National Park. But on our way there, we stopped at Mt. Robson.

IMG_8438

Finally, Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada.  The stunning lakes and the glaciers in this park, blew my mind….

IMG_8530

IMG_8539

IMG_8458

IMG_8494 IMG_8481

IMG_1529 IMG_1537

Seeing a glacier is a staggering experience. But standing on it,  is another story. It made me think of my own mortality. Geee…some people go through life without realizing how awesome it is to be alive. While God gave me the chance to stand in one of his marvelous creations. It made me feel so small. My life, is but a speck on earth…. Really.  I thank you Lord for your patience with me. 🙂

IMG_8585

As if the above experiences weren’t mind blowing enough, our next destination took us to Lake Louise of Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It snowed for 2 days. So when we got to Fairmont Hotel in Lake Louise, it felt like I was in winter wonderland.

IMG_8724

IMG_8735

20150915_095729 IMG_8781

Moraine Lake is as breathtaking as Lake Louise. Look! 🙂

IMG_8793

This place is about 15 minutes drive from Lake Louise. Summer time is great in both lakes. But I loved the winter weather better. haha…

IMG_8818

See, clear blue lakes. With the rockies as their backdrop. Plus snow! I didn’t ask for the latter. But God knew what perfect means. To me, that is…  I am a happy, spoiled child! 🙂 Thank you, thank you Lord!

IMG_8820

Am I tiring you? I am not done yet. 🙂 So let me tire you more. ha ha

Let me proceed to the town of Banff.

At the castle-like office of Parks Canada. 🙂

IMG_8990

At the Banff Fairmont Hotel.

IMG_8967

With the Resident Artist of Fairmont Hotel, Mr. Brent Lynch. I found his paintings really awesome. 🙂

IMG_8953

Okay, notice the colors in his paintings and the pictures below? Blue, azure, aquamarine, jade, green… Those are normal hues for lakes and rivers in Alberta. You really should visit the place. Believe me, you would be amazed too. 🙂

IMG_8924

Got tired of walking here. ha ha… Fall certainly adds to the beauty of the place.

IMG_9002

At Tunnel Mountain…

IMG_8845 IMG_8879

At Lake Minnewanka… 🙂

IMG_8885

I have so much  to share about Banff, but I will do so in my future blog.  So be sure to visit again. 🙂

After our Canada escapade, our trip brought us to Glacier National Park in Montana. At the Many Glacier Trail,  I saw for the first time, several black bears.  The place  was so windy that it almost blew me away. haha But check out the view!

The sunrise, hitting the rocky mountains, was a sight to behold. I’m afraid that this picture fails in comparison to the actual view.

IMG_2460

Going to the Sun Road is a scary trip if you are like me who’s afraid of heights. 🙂 But despite that fact, the place is so beautiful.  This is easier said than done, but have the courage to face your fear.  You will be rewarded with amazing views on top. And at the bottom, is Lake McDonald’s, where the picture below was taken.

IMG_9038

Ahhh , the first time we went to Yellowstone National Park, the U.S. Government shutdown all the parks. So before we could enjoy ourselves then, we were asked to leave. Awful huh? 😦

So we made sure for it to be a part of our road trip this year.  And here we are, Yellowstone, the second time around. 🙂

IMG_9378

This is just a preview of why we wanted to see Yellowstone. More of this soon as well.

IMG_9340

Right at the boundary of Yellowstone National Park, is Grand Teton National Park. That’s where the photo below was taken.

IMG_9382

IMG_9389

On our way to visit the family, we had several stop overs. Two of those are the Fantastic Caverns in Missouri. And The Parthenon in Tennessee.

IMG_9465

IMG_9480

It has been an amazing journey.  All those experiences, have taught me so many things. And made me appreciate our nature more. I know that I will never be the same person again.

Traveling has broadened my mind.

For all these things, I will forever be grateful to God. Thank you Lord for granting my heart’s desires and more.  With the love of my life.
